Hi everyone I recently was diagnosed with Graves' disease and have now found out the meds I'm taking have caused me to have adrenal fatigue I hate doctors
I'm really pissed: Hi everyone I recently was... - Thyroid UK
I'm really pissed
Hi, I have Graves. What meds are you taking ?
Christine
Eutroxsig is thyroxine, usually prescribed for hypothyroidism - are you on block and replace? Taking thyroxine doesn't usually cause adrenal fatigue. Why do you think it has? It's being hypo that causes adrenal fatigue.
Thankyou for your reply I was told off doctor, my friend and my friends endocrinologist told her. I'm on 100 mg every morning
Well, I honestly don't think it's true.
But, if you have Graves, why are you taking a treatment for hypothyroidism?
Because they gave it to me and I'll ask are you a doctor
No, I'm not a doctor, but I do know that Grave's disease is hyperthyroidism, not hypothyroidism, so there's been a mix-up, somewhere.
If you've had a TT I think its not surprising you feel bad due to the fact that T3 is the only active thyroid hormone. Some with hypo might still have a little T3 from their gland whereas you have none, so your T4 (levo) should be sufficient to provide you with enough T3 (converts from T4).
Thank you I'll talk more with the doctor
I don't know why you weren't given T3 along with your T4.Research has shown that many feel a benefit with T4/T3 combinations so without a gland I think that is the least you should be offered. There's plenty of scientific evidence:

Yes I don't understand either
As you have had your thyroid removed you will be HYPO - as suggested by greygoose . In an earlier thread of yours shaws suggested taking T3 in addition to the T4.
Maybe have the 24 hour saliva testing done privately with Genova Diagnostics if you think it could be adrenals. Also a FT3 test is needed to check conversion of the T4 ....
Thanks for your reply I had a blood test done yesterday for thyroid not sure if ft3 was on the form
Often not - sadly ...
The form said tsh, tft if indicated not sure what this mean I'll ask doctor when I see him next
Possible reasons for Adrenal fatigue
hypothyroid for several years before being diagnosed (either because no one understood, or your doctor kept using the TSH and saying it was normal)
if you have been on T4-only medications like Synthroid, Levoxyl, Eltroxin, Oroxine, Tirosent, etc (which end up poorly treating your hypothyroidism)
if you have been through chronic emotional or biological stress of any kind
if you have chronic inflammation, or Lyme, or any chronic illness.…
….your stress-busting adrenals may have been working hard to keep you going. They first do this by providing you with extra cortisol and adrenaline–a normal reaction. Even a poor diet and excess exposure to heavy metals and toxins could have further stressed your adrenals.
I had a growth on my thyroid when I was a teenager I was diagnosed with coeliacs two years ago and diagnosed with Graves this year I have had trouble with anemia forever so I think the coeliacs disease may have been missed somewhere along the line as I was also diagnosed with epilepsy when I was a teenager
Longterm poor treatment of hypothyroidism can lead to adrenal stress, and if your adrenals are compromised may well be impacting on your ability to uptake meds. Adrenals kick in to try to help you keep going, as Hidden says. You may be struggling to convert t4. Depending on how long that has been going on will depend on if the enzyme that coverts will kick back in once adrenal function improves.
None of this may apply to you in any way, I am not medical. It is what happened to me. (Not had TT but long term Hypo) But worth thinking about.
I also walk 5 km a day and try workout for 15 mins a day if I'm not to tired
Be careful, with the exercise. It can have an adverse effect if your metabolism is not stable. Have to get thyroid/adrenal function balanced first.
Ok thanks didn't realise I walk to release stress
It is just something to be aware of, it may not affect you in that way but just in case.
If your adrenals are not fully functioning as they should it could be lowering your metabolism further, and making it harder for your body to process your hormones/meds. This is roughly how it was explained to me. I do walk dogs during the day, sometimes find it harder than others, just have to take it steady.
I think the trick is to not go, full out on an exercise regime, wearing yourself out, until you are feeling more able. If you are struggling to recover afterwards, you know you are doing too much, maybe? All the best.
Also Thankyou for your reply
