Proceed with caution!

My recent flare (TSH 0.11, fT4 16, but dropping to 12 with cessation of biotin supplement) was not at all comfortable -- weak arms and frozen shoulder. I didn't get any other expected symptoms, but now have to crawl back out of the pit following a dose reduction.

Previously:

Free T4 14.9.....Ref Range is 11.0 - 26.0

TSH 2.03............Ref Range is 0.35 - 4.50

Free T3 4.0........Ref Range is 3.0 - 6.8

Currently:

Free T4 21.8 (9.0 - 24)

TSH 0.13 (0.3 - 6.0 )

You asked if you should push for an increase. Without knowing what your FT3 level is then it's not possible to say. Your TSH has reduced considerably and is low enough to panic your GP, your FT4 (even though it's a different range) is 85% through range. If you increase Levo you will very likely push your FT4 over range. If your FT3 is still low you would ideally need to add T3 not increase Levo, which is why it's important to see an FT3 result if you are still symptomatic with these current TSH and FT4 results.

Since the NHS will not test for T3 I will definitely consider Blue Horizon to see what the T3 is at......

saltcoats If you are going to test with BH, make sure you get FT4 and FT3 done at the same time, FT3 on it's own isn't any good.

@saltcoats Yes, same 'rules' apply every time:

Do test (GP or home) as early as possible in the morning, no later than 8.30-9.00

Fast overnight (you can have water)

Leave off Levo for 24 hours

Until 24th March Medichecks have 15% off (except their Thyroid Thursday offers) so do a price comparison

As above, if you feel well then this may well be the dose for you, but if not you may not be converting. The magic is in the t3 number: if it's right up there close to the top of the range w the t4 that's a good result, but if it's low and you have symptoms, you may not be processing the levo well.

Thank you for all your replies.....I actually feel very good......I have found that my hair is thicker, and I don't need my afternoon nap so much......still very cold at night.

Saltcoats,

If you feel very good your dose is optimal and your results are fine. It won't hurt to know what your FT3 is but not essential as you're feeling good.

It took 2 years after I was optimally medicated before I stopped feeling cold. Some things take a while to catch up.
