Are you still taking ThyroGold or Metavive or another NDT or are you now on Levo only?

It's essential to test FT3 when on any form of NDT or Metavive because that's the most important result, but it's also useful to test it when on Levo only.

Also, how do you feel?

Sorry SeasideSusie, I take 175mcg levo thyroxine and 150mg ThyroGold.

So you need FT3 testing as well.

Which version of Metavive are you taking - porcine or bovine? The porcine is said to have more T3 in it than the bovine.

I don't take Metavive at the moment. However, I probably will try that after my Thyro Gold is finished. ( I really like Thyro Gold but it became too expensive for me)

Sorry, I misread that, should have gone to Specsavers!

But you still need FT3 testing :)

I will look into the T3 testing privately as my GP doesn't think it is necessary. Thanks :)

Does your GP know you take ThyroGold? Whenever we take T3 in any form, being synthetic or in NDT then it's absolutely essential to know where our FT3 level lies.

No, they don't. I will look into Blue Horizon as they have a Free T3 blood test for £49.00

It will be cheaper to do a Medichecks Thyroid Monitoring test - TSH, FT4 and FT3 - there's 20% off until midnight on Monday 29th April, it's only £31 at the moment (normally £39).

Just testing FT3 is not a good idea

You need FT3 and FT4 and TSH tested together

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Also extremely important to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw). This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

If/when also on T3, or NDT make sure to take last dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

Thank you SlowDragon for your tips and advice, I bought the Medichecks plus yesterday already as I wondered if my Gp ever tested me for anything else than Serum free T4 level and Serum TSH level.

jannet in reply to SlowDragon

Hi SlowDragon can you have a look at my results please,

The Medichecks plus result came back yesterday:

TSH

0.008 mIU/L 0.27 - 4.2

FREE T3

7.34 pmol/L 3.1 - 6.8

FREE THYROXINE

27.9 pmol/L 12 - 22

THYROGLOBULIN ANTIBODIES

68.8 kU/L < 115

THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES

22.1 kIU/L < 34

This is the comment from the Medichecks doctor: Your thyroid stimulating is low whilst your free thyroxine and T3 are both high. This suggests that your thyroid medication dose may be too high. Your thyroid antibodies are normal revealing no evidence of autoimmune thyroid disease.

SlowDragon: I am thinking telling my Gp about the results so they can decrease my Levothyroxine.

Thanks :)

Great pity you didn't get Thyroid plus ultra vitamin test

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Suggest you ask GP to do so or you need to test privately

Low vitamins prevents thyroid hormones working, typically causing high FT4,

Did you do thyroid test as recommended ?

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting. Thanks SlowDragon for your reply, I did the fasting and early in the morning blood test.

So if NDT last dose was 8-12 hours before blood test, these results suggest over medication

But if vitamin levels are low this slows use of thyroid hormones
