Try getting these minerals from foods e.g. Cashew nuts can provide a lot of zinc and Brazil nuts can provide magnesium. The latter will also provide Selenium, crucial for conversion of T4 to T3 but don't eat more than 2 Brazil nuts per day it will give too much Se. Note that dark chocolate also has Magnesium - but I have never looked up how much you have to eat to get the daily recommended amount (sounds like fun though!) Google other foods which provide these minerals, the ones I have mentioned are just the obvious ones, there may be other more interesting sources.

I didn't know that about cashews, thank you. 🙂

Magnesium oxide (in this inexpensive tablet) is not considered to be that easily absorbed. However, I've not actually tried this blend in the same tablet as I take zinc citrate separately in the evening. May be worth a try. With Magnesium you should start to notice a general improvement in the relaxation of muscles - less cramps, aches and twitches and better sleep (although that's not a guarantee).

Magnesium citrate (very easily absorbed, good if you've had constipation), malate (good for muscular fatigue and fibro symptoms), taurate (good for cardio problems) are some readily absorbable alternatives, so are worth investigating to suit your own symptoms.

Very high cocoa chocolate is great for magnesium, but probably won't help you sleep; so are cashews and almonds. I like the latter two in spreadable butter form on (gluten free) toast.

Going overboard on chocolate reduces ATP production though i.e. reduces energy, so shouldn't be your only source of magnesium, I'm afraid!

I like Epsom Salt Baths and I didn't get the tingling / burning as I did with the sprays.

You can also buy a liquid Magnesium that you rub on the skin and absorb it that way or put Epsom salts in the bath. Not sure how much you'd get by doing that though.

If you choose to supplement zinc it is a good idea to get your level tested first. If you supplement when you don't need it, it can upset copper balance in body.

As others have said, magnesium malate is good for fibro/muscular type pain.

Hello R4RAA,,,when I remember I take magnesium and zinc from Holland & Barrett,,,and I also take thyroid meds,,,,the meds go down first thing in the morning and the magnesium and zinc go down after breakfast, or lunch,,,never on an empty stomach,,,,just take the recommended amount on the jars,,,and see how you feel after a few weeks,,I love cashews,,but chewing them is hard work sometimes,,,there are many foods you can get these from, but sometimes a quick supplement and you could be feeling better sooner,,,,and less calories,,,good luck,,,ttfn from karen.

Hi

Definitely do not take them from Holland & B as they are full of fillers.

Having done studies on magnesium the best one is magnesium chloride which like most minerals should be taken at night. You use magnesium whilst you sleep so it will help and muscles spasms etc. Roughly 70% is absorbed depending upon your stomach acid. Citrate is about 6%. You can have a red cell magnesium test ( not on NHS tho!!) and mag sulphate injections are available and are 99% effective- the Epsom salts are good too.

Bio care multi mineral is probably the best all round tablet around. It has selenium zinc and copper etc in the capsules so no imbalance there.

Chocolate well you can buy 99% from friars on line ( Lindt )or just have plain cocoa powder on berries . No sense in having sugar you don't need.

Yes nuts and seeds are great all in moderation - not sure two will lead to an imbalance especially if you are having supplements.

Good luck- let me know why you chose these two specifically.
