I have been suffering for four years or more now with what I think is my thyroid my tests in past year said I'm ok but yet still feel lethargic wanting to sleep in afternoon an overwhelming tiredness I've gained weight yet I do not eat dairy products or have a lot of fatty foods. I have itchy skin and also dry patches of skin on face and forehead my hair feels dry and it's been breaking off although I have regular hair cuts. I feel low in mood at times for no apparent reason. I'm going back to the doctors to see what he says this afternoon not feeling optermistic

Do mention this to your GP. Good luck ! Also ask for copies of all test results - perhaps they are not as normal as you were told 😊 They are legally yours ....

nicola1620 If you are considering iodine then you need to get it tested first to see if you are deficient. If you are then iodine supplementation should be done under the supervision of an experienced practioner, and it has to be balanced with selenium.

Welcome to our forum and 'first things first'. Have you been diagnosed as being hypothyroid? or with hashimotos?

If not, start at the beginning. Ask your GP to do a Full Thyroid Function Test, on the advice of the NHS Choices for dysfunctions of the thyroid gland. He may not do all of them but you can get a private one from a recommended lab if you can afford it.

The test has to be the very earliest possible, fasting (you can drink water) and if you were on thyroid hormone replacements you'd allow 24 hours gap between dose and test and take afterwards.

Test is TSH, T4, T3, Free T3, Free T4 and thyroid antibodies.

Also ask GP to test B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as we are usually deficient which ca also cause problems.

Get a print-out of the results with the ranges and post on a new question.

Members will respond.
