Acid Reflux

Further to finding out from some really helpful and informative people on here that Omeprazole prevents Thyroxine from working correctly I am looking to replace it with something that wont affect the way Thyroxine works. Any recommendations would be really appreciated.

Hoping there will be some advice there for you - if not people will be along with lots of links for you soon ....

It doesn't affect the thyroxine works, it affects the absorption of thyroxine, because it lowers stomach acid.

I use Betaine PCI for acid reflux which has helped enormously. Don't believe it impacts on thyroid meds.

I took a ppi for years due to acid reflux. Eventually it lowered my magnesium levels so badly it made me very ill. I'm now informed that acid reflux was probably a symptom of low magnesium anyway and taking the lanzoprazole just made the problem worse.

I have supplemented with magnesium and strangely the acid reflux has now resolved along with many other horrid symptoms. I wouldn't touch ppis with a barge pole, they are seriously dangerous to your health!

I found a sustained release magnesium made by jigsaw which doesn't seem to interfere with my thyroxin.

Incidentally, serum levels of magnesium are not a good indicator of a deficiency because of the feedback mechanism that operates to maintain serum levels. The NHS do not offer a red cell test which you would have to get done privately, I used Medicheck.

I hope you resolve this soon and manage to get off the ppi, I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy!

Good luck!

Thank you all so so much for all of your information. I will sit and read through all later.

I had mild acid reflux, but it was still most every day and preventing me from sleeping.

I now have a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a small glass of water twice a day. My reflux has mostly gone.

There is an argument that reflux is actually usually caused by low acid, not the high acid doctors will assume. You can do a simple home test by taking some bicarbonate of soda in water and timing to see if you burp. This is called the burp test and you can easily search up the details.

If you find your acid is low, you can then start following that up. ACV is good for mild cases, but if you need it you can go on to betaine tablets.

One has to be wary when stopping PPIs. There is an effect of giving up called something like "rebound hyper-secretion of stomach acid".

This means that, however bad your acid problem was before you started PPIs, after you've been taking them for a fairly short while (4 - 8 weeks or longer) you will have a much more severe problem with acid than you started with.

As a result, coming off PPIs is not easy. I don't have any good answers. People differ in how much trouble they have coming off PPIs. I came off PPIs ages ago, but struggled enormously at the time because I didn't know why the problems I was having arose, why coming off PPIs was so painful, and I didn't know what I should be doing to substitute for the PPIs.

I have discovered a lot more info since I gave up PPIs though, and I like the following links.

The scdlifestyle links are fairly short and to the point, the Chris Kresser links are longer and much more detailed.

scdlifestyle.com/2012/03/3-...

scdlifestyle.com/2012/03/ho...

scdlifestyle.com/2013/10/4-...

Chris Kresser explains why problems arise in the first place :

2) chriskresser.com/the-hidden...

3) chriskresser.com/more-evide...

4) chriskresser.com/how-your-a...

5) chriskresser.com/how-your-a...

6) chriskresser.com/get-rid-of...

One thing Chris Kresser doesn't mention is that hypothyroidism can reduce stomach acid production. But the effects on the sufferer are just as problematic as they are for people with low acid for other reasons.
