elizabethanera Normal thyroid function tests ie TSH, FT4, FT3 need to be carried out. If your TSH is very low and your FT4 very high (FT3 not always done) that will point to hypERthyroidism.

High TSH and low FT4 and FT3 mean hypOthyroidism.

Check out ThyroidUK's main website, they have a page about testing and getting a diagnosis.

Many thanks. On a routine outpatient appt I was asked if I had been tested for hyperthyroidism, told to who said literally your bloods were ok twice! as you say if it is hperthyroidism, yes I would be producing too much of something. They don't think like it atall if you try to "help them".Even got told last week I was over my allotted time and had been 20 mins instead of the allotted 10.told to make a double appt.then the receptionist insisted on checking with the GP as they are not allowed to book double appts!!!!All this n front of a full surgery? Just appalling.was mortified. X

Sometimes the medical 'professionals' are unprofessional unfortunately.

You need a full thyroid function blood test plus antibodies. Make the appointment as early as possible and fasting (you can drink water). Tick off the clinical symptoms and show to your GP. Tell him you've had advice from the NHS Choices for information on dysfunctions of the thyroid gland.

Get a print-out with the ranges and put them on a new question for comments.

At the same time as your blood tests for thyroid hormones ask for B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate to be done as we are usually deficient.

Thanks so much. Seeing a private consultant in early Jan. My doctor's used to be so nice, now all fairly new and rude and disrespectful.

I think nowadays they may have lost their enthusiasn and care for their patients and look on us 'hypothyroid' as a nuisance as we complain about our symptoms about which they are ignorant.

They have been very poorly trained in how to diagnose and prescribe: they are restricted to levothyroxine alone and the TSH, with the result that many patients cannot possibly improve their wellbeing and are resorting to sourcing their own and recovering.

We should have recourse to any thyroid hormones NDT, (of which Big Pharma spread rumours and they believe them) T3, T4/T3 . We the patients who take other than levothyroxine alone are back to work and good health would definitely disagree with the guidelines.

They don't realise that an optimum of thyroid hormones should relieve all of disabling symptoms and give us a productive life rather than one of ill-health. If we were fit/well we'd not be searching the internet
