Gum problems??

Hi has anybody been suffering with their gums and hypothyroidism ?

My gums have been shrinking for a while but this year my hypo seems to be like a catalyst for them getting worse. Is this possible?

Shrinking gums can be due to low HGH. Low HGH can be due to low T3. So, indirectly, yes.

greygoose That is interesting and explains the link - thanks. Is the excessive plaque cause by some alteration to the saliva do you know? I used to get inflammation of my salivary glands if I drank cinzano thinking about it - very odd!

I'm afraid I don't know anything about that. :)

Yes mine were a complete mess and tons of plaque that had to be painfully chiseled out. Since I got treated for overt hypothyroidism (atropic autoimmune) there has been quite an improvement even more so on NDT than Levo but I still get the hygienist to clean them every 6 months to keep it at bay. So I'd say it is definitely related to hypo

Thanks for your answers. I'm seeing the dentist next week and will ask about the connection and see what is actually going on. I haven't checked my vit d or b12 yet.

Hello I was diagnosed as Hypothyroid in Aug 2015, around this time I had been referred by my dentist to a gum specialist as my gums had become so bad. I needed a crown replacing but my dentist wouldn't do it till my gums improved. The specialist I saw advised it was related to thyroid, and also confirmed that some of the pain I was feeling in my gums was also related to sinus infection. Since then I've had a tooth out, a crown replaced and a crown/bridge fitted. So a lot of tooth/gum related problems coinciding with thyroid problems.Since starting medication my gums are definitely a lot better, not 100% but better than what they were. I have noticed that the plaque build up has also reduced with the recent addition of T3. Best of luck.

I am very interested to hear your answers Tateanne , as my son has, just this morning, had to go to Dentist for exactly the same problem. He had 3 teeth out because of this only a month ago and is going through it again, the other side of his mouth. I know his FT3 is very low, so will be talking to the Endo about this at the next appointment.
