Gum Disease anyone?

Hello,

I am having real problems with my teeth and gums, one dentist said that becasue I am hypothroid my saliva production is less and therefore more prone to decay as the bacteria dont get washed away so readily. Has anyone else expereinced this and what can be done,?? Don't want to be toothless............

I think teeth and gums are probably two slightly different issues... weak teeth is more about nutrients like calcium, magnesium, vitamin D etc etc, while gum disease is more about bacterial overgrowth in the mouth.

I got very concerned about my gums recently but when I went to see a dentist it turned out that although they have receded in places, they are in good health and don't bleed. I have been using a herbal mouthwash containing neem and I think that may have halted the decline. Neem makes the microbes less sticky and so they can be rinsed away. My dentist said some of the regular mouthwashes are too harsh, and actually make the situation worse. So more by luck than anything else, I seem to have done the right thing!

If your gums are receeding, you probably have low HGH (Human Growth Hormone). This is quite common in hypos but it is rarely tested for because the treatment is horrendously expensive. What one has to do is to optimise one's thyroid hormone and hope the rest will follow suite, because they're all linked.

Teeth and gums need hormones just like any other part of your body, If you have been hypo for a long time, it's more than likely that the teeth didn't get enough thyroid hormone during developement. And I've no idea what you can do about it! Getting thyroid hormone replacement doesn't seem to help - well it wouldn't would it, it's too late. I've always been very good about cleaning my teeth and flossing etc, right from a child, but my teeth are just disintegrating. I don't have many left!

I didn't know that. Thanks Grey.

I'm not hypOthyroid, but I've had low adrenals for a really long time... possibly all my life (my mum is hypOadrenal). I have low blood pressure, lack of tolerance to stress, extreme fatigue - and that's when I am feeling pretty healthy!

And I think my sex hormones have come fallen off a cliff in the last year or so (although nothings been measured - I'm not going to give a GP the pleasure of telling me I'm perimenopausal).

The gum thing suddenly came to light after a period of renewed immune activity. I stupidly went on a gluten challenge, then was so run down that I caught every infection under the sun.

Maybe my hormones haven't recovered from all that - I'm utterly bolloxed if I stay up past 10pm, so I think that's quite likely!

The big question is: what on earth can I do about it?

Yes, that's typical of low HGH, too. You can't stay up late. Well, I don't know how it works in England, I live in France. I don't know if they will test your HGH (test is called IGF 1) or if they will consider treatment after - treatment is a daily injection of HGH, which works brilliantly! If you can afford it! I couldn't for very long, not long enough for it to have much permenant effect. But, as I said, I'm hoping that things will sort themselves out on their own now that I'm on a decent dose of T3. Time will tell, but hope springs eternal!

I think I've been hypoadrenal most of my life as well as hypothyroid. I'm a bit of a mess, really! lol For your sex hormones, are you getting enough fat? How is your cholesterol? Mine is rock-bottom - which doctors think is marvellous! - so my testosterone is very low. Not much fun. But I do enjoy all the cream, butter and eggs I stuff myself with to try and bring it up! Doesn't work though. Sigh.

I eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and try to keep vegetable oils out of the house (although we are all rather partial to mayonnaise). Butter, clotted cream, nuts and avocados are on the menu too. I'm definitely not fat phobic!

My cholesterol is going up... was 5.5 last year, which is average apparently, and 6.5 a few weeks ago although that could be the antifungals that I've needed (they increase cholesterol). So I have cholesterol... or at the very least it's being produced as fast as it is being used, which might not be very fast!

I suspect enzyme deficiencies are keeping a whole lot of stuff from working... my liver enzymes are on the floor. A bit like cholesterol, doctors think that's fantastic, but in fact it's rubbish as I have no alcohol tolerance, and a lung full of petrol fumes yesterday meant that I felt nauseous for hours, while nobody else even noticed the smell!

Keep enjoying your butter and cream! There's got to be a silver lining somewhere in all this.

Hi poing, have you read about the new guidelines for eating bacon, and any preserved meat, now classed as class A carcinogenic. Only 3 slices of bacon, can raise your risk of cancer by about 20%.

It doesn't mean that you can't eat it, but it sounds like your eating way too much. Then everyone reacts differently, he goes on about your gut biome, which we all know is very very important to good health. Seems that the correlation between good gut health, and cancer is very interconnected.

This is interesting by Dr. Mercola.

Sheesh, if I eat 100g of bacon a day (which I don't, as bacon is not an every day food for me) 20% is the relative risk i.e. the risk relative to the risk of getting a specific type of cancer in the first place, which is already fairly small. So my chances of getting colorectal cancer would increase from 5% to 6%... assuming all other things are equal, which they never are. It's not going to stop me eating dry cure bacon a couple of times a week.

Nope neither would I, coz we could get killed just crossing the road. Some things just have to be done!

yep, I have sore inflames gums at least 50% of the time. I'm convinced there is a connection. Whether it is due to thyroid levels not being quite right or just having a dodgy immune system. Gum disease is also associated with heart disease, as is thyroid disease which is slightly worrying for the future. I have been on high T3 the last year (20ug) along with my T4 and my gum problems may have been worse. Currently trying out T4 only. Still getting gum problems so far.

There are several varieties available on Amazon. Or have a look in google shopping for other online retailers. I don't really know which one is best, and have only tried one!

Look at any other ingredients too... I also tried a mouthwash based on goldenseal and bunch of other antimicrobials - it was way too harsh. The herbal antimicrobials can be quite powerful.

I have suffered with gum disease for years and have a very good dentist who has helped save quite a few of my teeth. I then went on to T3 and both myself and my dentist couldn't believe the difference in my gums - they were bright red and very healthy. Unfortunately I had to stop the T3 and my gums have now reverted back to being prone to infection.

Hi Moggie, I am really hoping that you can tell me how you managed to get prescribed T3 please? My T3 is very low even though my T4 is really high (I'm on T4 meds) and I also have gum issues. I'm desperate to get my hands on some T3 because my body clearly needs it but I just don't know how to go about it, do you have any advice at all please? Thanks in advance!!

Have you got Sialadenitis?

Try eating food or sweets that increase salivia production.

Ive got radioactive sialadentis from thyroid cancer treatment. The pain drives me insane.

Bleeding gums is also associated with low vit D.....oops somoen mentioned this further up this post -sorry!

sadly i have remedied my low vit D and B12 but still have the gum disease...lol. Am very well medicated on my thyroid meds and have supplemented my self well....still no joy -so maybe it is low HGH -not been tested....thanks

Have you been tested for Sjogrens syndrome? That is autoimmune and can affect your dental health.

I posted about this just last week - I have it and it turns out that as you say, if you have one autoimmune disease, you can easily have another. I suck sugar-free mints when out and drink loads when in the house. Eyes are often affected too - gritty and sticky. It affects all the secretary glands, so saliva, tears, mucous (hence a cough and poor digestion).
