Food list help.

HI to everyone, I have had hypothyroidism for 8 years now and still feel awful even though my thyroid medication is correct. It looks like I may have to change my diet. Can anyone help me with a list of all the foods and drinks I can eat and cannot eat. I am constantly tired and so wish I could be back to normal. When I was diagnosed with the condition in 2008 I asked my GP if I have had the condition all my life, my father had the condition and it killed him, my brother has it too. Can the disease run the family? I have made an appointment with my doctor to test me for any food allergies.

Hope someone can help me with food list.

Thanks.

Debbie

Do you mean you'd like to try being gluten free? Some people find it helps w raised antibodies. It's just a matter of eating food which doesn't contain gluten, so largely grains like wheat, barley, rye, spelt are excluded (but it's trickier than that as a lot of foods have added gluten, even certain cheeses, corn flakes etc). I'd google gluten free diet and read up on it. A whole list would be impossible to post here.

It isn't a quick fix, or even a sure thing. A year of being gf didn't help me (though others here feel much improved).

I'd be more interested in what your 'correct' meds look like. Do you have printouts of your blood results? Do you know if your ferritin, b12, d, folate etc are at very robust levels?

Are you on levo? It doesn't work for everyone. Rather than going down the diet route, which takes this whole thing out of the medical sphere, I think you may want to stick w making sure you're on enough meds and the right meds. Then any remaining symptoms can be tweaked w diet etc.

Thank you so much that was very interesting to know. I levothyroxine is the correct level. I have started avoiding gluten and trying to give up dairy products. But I did read that raw organic milk is better for hypothyroidism sufferers.

I didn't know about this place, thank you again.

The only thing you really cannot eat, is unfermented soy - soy milk, soy flour, soy protein, soy oil, etc. And, you have to be very careful, because they add it to just about anything processed. So, the best thing to do is cut out all processed foods, and cook from scratch.

Apart from that, eat anything you like that likes you - if it disagrees with you, don't eat it. Make sure you get plenty of protein, good fats, fresh fruit and veg, some carbs, not too much fibre, and don't skimp in the salt.

But, none of that will help if you're not optimally medicated. So, best to post your lab results - with ranges, and let us have a look.

However well you eat, being hypo you're likely to have nutritional deficiencies, because hypos tend to have low stomach acid. So, it's best to get your vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin tested, and supplement any deficiencies. Don't expect your doctor to help with that, they know nothing about nutrition. Post your results on here, and we'll help you. :)

if you have Hashi's then a good diet to adapt to is the AIP one. Lots of fruit, veg and proteins like salmon, fish, chicken. Good fats like coconut oil (which I love spread on gluten free oakcakes) and olive oil

If you are feeling "rubbish" it's probably best to start by looking at what you are currently taking for your thyroid 1st. A list/doses of anything you are getting from the docs, anything you are adding yourself, & vitamins you are taking.

Then your blood test results with the ranges, so members can comment. Put it in a new thread so more people will see it.

For me, removing grains and dairy has made a huge difference. I'd agree with Jefner who posted above. It's got to be worth a try - if it makes no difference you can start eating them again. Also agree with EleanorM-G above about checking all your vitamins etc - some vitamins have made me feel terrible!

Doctors say you are properly medicated when your blood tests are in range. But it does not mean it is optimum for you and that especially applys to vits such as B12 .This is why others will ask you to show results with the ranges of that particular Lab without which any advice is guesswork .
