T4 (levothyroxine) should convert into T3 in the body.
T3 is "officially" known as triiodothyronine when it is in the body.

Have you had levels of vit D, folate, ferritin and b12 checked
These all need to be at very good levels for Levo to work
Also have you had both types of thyroid antibody checked? If either or both are high then you have hashimotos - most common reason for being hypo

To know if you need to take T3, one needs to compare the FT4 with the FT3. The FT3 should be higher than the FT4 in their respective ranges.
