Cold straight from the jar if you are feeling really lazy. Or you can have it as a side salad with cold meats, or heat it up and have it with sausages and mash. It doesn't keep long once you open the jar.

Thanks Scazzoh. That sounds easy enough . Will give it a try .

Choucroute garnie or some variation thereof? Think mixed grill/full English sort of dishes but w sauerkraut.

I wonder if you could add it to recipes in place of capers and gherkins. I make salsa verde in the summer to have w fish and chicken and I'm sure you could hide a lot of sauerkraut in there if you chopped it finely (and it's more lightweight fare than the recipes above).

pb. I love fish would it go with it as well as meat ?

I don't see why not. Look here: google.co.uk/search?q=sauer...

This is the salsa verde recipe I use. I'm sure if you subbed sauerkraut in place of some of the capers, gherkins and anchovies (basically the salty stuff) it would be fine. Just make it to taste and be aware it will be salty, so don't add any. jamieoliver.com/recipes/veg...

Beautiful w chicken and any kind of fish, salad etc.

Wow thanks pb. I'm afraid the anchovies wouldn't figure in my food so sauerkraut it is. Thanks again !

Fish goes beautifully with it, especially smoked haddock. Make a nice creamy sauce, and boil some potatoes. Great!

Why do you need to hide it?

puncturedbicycle profile image
puncturedbicycle in reply toScazzoh

Scazzoh was that reply for me? I guess I meant 'use it as an ingredient' as opposed to making it a main component of a meal. If you're trying to introduce something into your diet that you're not accustomed to you may not fancy it being a main part of every meal. :-)

To be fair I eat fermented cabbage with random dishes so if there is space on my plate and it won't get mix to much I just dump some on. Where I live it's easier to get kimchi rather than sauerkraut but I like both.

bluebug , I've heard of kimchi but not sure what it is . Thanks Pp

It's Korean fermented cabbage. It's not vegetarian as they use a fish sauce in it.

Asian pickles can be very fiery. I keep mine fairly plain, so I can eat a good amount. Bear in mind, pickling does nothing to remove goitrogens, so I concentrate on carrots, slivered lengthwise on a mandoline -- they're meant to be good for absorbing excess oestrogens.

My SBT you are really into it. Early days for me yet lol .

Anytime you like with anything. Nice with potatoes. You can also juice it and drink before a meal as a digestive aid. It has a real kick.

Potatoes sound good Angel . Being cabbage does it produce wind from the (nether) regions ? 😕

No idea. I'm vegan so used to eating lots of veg, If you are not, it might. But being fermented means that it helps the digestion (like a probiotic).

I forgot about bibimbap. I made this recipe w kimchi, but I don't see why you couldn't use sauerkraut instead. blueapron.com/recipes/veget...

The veg can be anything you like, and if you're avoiding grains you might use quinoa instead, so don't feel you have to stick exactly to the recipe. It's just a template.

I wondered about making some myself, I read that you just shove a load in some salt, mush it up a bit and leave in a sealed jar in the fridge for about a week?

So they say Jefner , but buying a jar of organic is the best way for me to try it for the first time. Pp

In Holland we used to mix sauerkraut with mashed potato and serve it with a warmed smoked pork sausage. It was a very tasty winter warmer which was fantastic to come home to after a long day's skating on local farmer's flooded fields when I was young. Have revived this favourite meal since being able to get sauerkraut in Tesco's and it brings back memories of a time when I could spend hours doing something very energetic without even tiring slightly... I normally warm both the sausage and a portion of sauerkraut in a steamer, with the potatoes boiling on the pan below. Then I chop the sausage up, mash the potatoes and mix it all together, curl up on the sofa and watch something good on TV whilst eating it. Lovely!!!

Wow Zephyrbear that sounds lovely What a special memory .

I have had my first taste for lunch with white fish and some small beets from the garden , it was ok but I think something like your smoked sausage would be better . When I opened the jar the smell almost knocked me over , I will have to get used to that 😱

Thank you for your ideas . Pp

I bought a large jar of sauerkraut from a Polish shop; didn't check the tiny print in the shop. After eating some I had a temporary vision distortion - like looking through water in one segment of vision - checked the label with a magnifying glass and there was Aspartame (written in Polish but recognisable).

I wonder if anyone else gets this vision distortion with Aspartame and MSG.

Check your label if you need to avoid this.

Hi I paid £6 fora jar basically the size of a jar of jam . I ordered it through that large river place and its organic I can't see Aspartame anywhere on the label . Pp
