From mild depression to suicidal thought because of t4 only med

This is my e-mail to my ex-doctor. I am sure that could describe my situation very well.

I only want to add that now I have got a t3 medication from Malaysia by expending a lot no. of money and I am so afraid to use that synthetic medication also. Plus there is no diagnostic center in my city to test free t3 or t4. I went to a thyroid doctor also who doesnt know about liothyronine and natural thyroid! I have no one left to help in this 3rd world country except the internet.

Just before 7 months I had a dream to completing p.h.d in Economics and now I think of committing suicide 24/7. I went to that doctor just for a solution to increase my concentration!

Welcome to the forum, SohanFrankyy.

We'll need more information to help you. What were your thyroid results and ranges, how much Levothyroxine were you prescribed, and how long did you take it for?

In the UK Levothyroxine is the recommended therapy for hypothyroidism and it is very difficult to get T3 prescribed unless it is recommended by a specialist. Some CCGs have banned prescribing of T3 completely.

If you are in the UK you can order finger prick home thyroid tests to check FT4 and FT3 from Blue Horizon and Genova via thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Thank you for your concerns.

I have been taking Levothyroxine for 6 months, first 1 month I was in 50 then I did not have for another month because of severe side effect. Because the symptoms became worse I have again gone to the doctor again and he prescribed me 75 mcg as my TSH went to 38 ml and that was 4 months ago.

Last month I checked my T4 and TSH & their results were respectively 107.1 & 4.20. Yet, the thyroid doctor (a new one) prescribed me 75 mcg of Levothyroxine and he totally neglected the fact that I have got severe depression because of Levothyroxine. Later I have told him to check my free t3 and t4, but he totally neglected them also. It seemed like he is not aware of them!

I am not from any developed country which is another major problem. So, I can't make those tests. But I have collected Cytomel from Malaysia by expending a lot of money. I do not know what to do now! I am in a dilemma and feel like there is no hope for future.

SohanFrankyy,

It's very unlikely Levothyroxine caused the depression. It is more likely depression was due to your hypothyroid symptoms worsening while you were prescribed 50mcg Levothyroxine.

25mcg Cytomel is equivalent to 75mcg Levothyroxine. Most people taking T3 split it into 2 or 3 doses daily to even out the peaks and troughs of the T3.

Which country are you in?

I am in Bangladesh.

If the depression is not due to Levothyroxine then why I have ended up with suicidal thoughts just after having that medicines? I haven't felt alive since the time I was prescribed that medicine. You can check that out: stopthethyroidmadness.com/t...

I have got the 25 mcg t3 but just have not got any idea how to take that!

SohanFrankky,

Halve the 25mcg T3 and take 12.5mcg morning and 12.5mcg night time. Thyroid medication should be taken with water on an empty stomach, 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from iron, calcium, vitamin D supplements, and oestrogen.

I didn't say Levothyroxine works for everyone, I had problems with it myself. I don't think Levothyroxine causes suicidal ideation, however. You may find T3 beneficial in relieving depression.

Are you able to import from Europe to Bangladesh? European T3 may be less expensive than the Malaysian T3.

Thanks again for your suggestion. I appreciate that and I am so much grateful. This is the first time someone is understanding my speeches.

I am not sure of importing as I have not tried that yet. The product which I have got from Malaysia, I have got throughout a dealer. But I will reflect on importing from Europe if t3 works for me.

By "importing", Clutter does not mean in large quantities, for a business.

Within the European Union, we can send packages between countries with little risk of Customs checks.

The EU supplier would need to fill out a Customs Declaration for your package, and it may be illegal to import medicines to your country, even for personal use.

It is also possible that the supplier chooses not to send to your country, or only if you absolve them of any liability for non-delivery.

Good luck!
