Levo not working

Hi I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 1 year now

Was prescribed levo at 75 mg which has done nothing im still sore all over tired have little concentration fuzzy eyes and mamy other issues. I tried putting myself up to 100 mg bit my gp said it was making my reading high and put me back to 75! I feel I have no quality of life and wondered if there was some other medication that would help me feel normal again and loose some of the 2.5 stone I have put on as diets do nothing

I think that's the worst thing when doctors ignore clinical symptoms (the fact that they know none doesn't help us) and concentrate wholly on the TSH result. There's been quite a few scientific articles stating the 'Tyranny of the TSH' but doctors are following the guidelines which, in turn, can actually harm patients as they are being denied an optimum of hormones their body requires.

They never do a free T3 test (which wouldn't be needed if patient was optimally medicated), so request a free T3 blood test as well as Vit B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate if you've not had them recently.

Before blood tests and levo was introduced we were prescribed sufficient NDT until symptoms were alleviated. We are not machines we are dealing with metabolism which requires sufficient T3 to be converted from T4 and at an optimum for us personally. Normal doses pre levo were 200mcg to 400mcg of NDT.

Blood tests for thyroid gland should be at the very earliest time and don't eat before it. Also leave about 24 hours between last dose of levo and test and take it afterwards.

(I am not medically qualified but am hypothyroid).

I feel as if I know so little so dont know what im asking for I also have no womb or ovaries and believe its a complete package of hormone/thyroid giving me problems

I am sorry you have more than a straight-forward medical  problem but you have to get your thyroid hormones at optimum then when you feel much better you can then go to the next step re your other hormones.

You are right that more than thyroid hormones may be required. Is your doctor referring you to a specialist?

No he has not offered me any specialist

As well as the tests Shaw's has advised, as you have no womb or ovaries I think it would be a good idea to get your sex hormones tested. See if your GP will refer you to a specialist or do tests for you. If not you can get them done yourself through Genova (details on ThyroidUK's main website).

I had their Menopause Plus test done which showed rock bottom for all hormones plus a problem with adrenals. I am consulting with a private hormone specialist and using herbal and vitamin supplements plus bioidentical progesterone cream to try and address the problem.
