Levothryroxine dosing

I'm on 75mgs on Levothyroxine which means splitting the tablet in half - this isn't easy as it crumbles. Does anyone have any suggestions? How would it impact on my body if I took 50mgs one day & 100mgs the next?

Thanks

hello my levothryoxine comes in 25mg tablets, could you ask your doctor to prescribe them like this too ?

Kindest regards Liz x

You can buy pill splitters in most pharmacies and they're not expensive. It'll do the job

Hi PaulineS,

I would be inclined to go ahead and take 50/100mcg alternate days as you suggested.

Some people take their dose once a week only.

I agree with Jose651, alternating 50/100mcg on alternate days should not cause any problems.

However, for splitting tablets my personal choice of method is to use a scalpel, craft knife or hobby knife. They can be bought from Amazon or hobby shops surprisingly cheaply and might even come with 5 or 10 spare blades. Only buy the ones with straight blades though - oddly shaped blades don't really work very well.

I can recommend this one, it will even split a tablet into quarters!

Should be fine,   T4 is a storage hormone so has no immediate impact.    There were some experiments done where people only took one large dose once a week with no adverse effects.

You should be able to edit your own post Galathea. (I've done it for you).

There were a couple of changes around 2 weeks ago by HU and I cannot do smiley face anymore at present. (It is needed sometimes).

Thanks Shaws.... No... Have lost the ability to edit posts, the down arrow only gives me the option to report posts, no longer an edit option. :-(.

I complained to HU about the smiley faces, they said they're working on it - that was several days ago!

They probably knew they were false :)  we don't have smiley faces

Why false? I often want to give some one a smile, or a big cheezey grin. Or any of the other emotions expressed by émoticons.

The written word can often be misconstrued, and be taken as being bossy, or critical. A smile shows you're not being aggressive. I can assure you I never use them falsely.

So, who is the 'we' that doesn't have smiley faces? Hypos? I can assure you that I often manage to smile, despite everything. It has a great psychological effect, too.

I know I was joking, that's why I put a smiley face :) Yes I agree about the psychological effect, it's good to laugh everyday

50 / 100 alternate days is fine.  Easy to split tablets.  Hold tablet between fingers and thumbs with the score mark opposite thumb nails.  Push with thumbs and it snaps perfectly.  Cutters tend to crush tablets.

Hi, you shouldn't need to cut them for the correct dose as levo comes in 25 mcg too. I don't know why your pharmacist didn't give you them, unless your gp wrote out the prescription incorrectly. Go back and ask for the smaller tabs. :-)

Not all brands do a 25 mcg tablet so if the user needs to stick to one brand the higher dose tablet has to be halved, I do this because of the brand I take.

True. But that actually means that ONE manufacturer (Actavis) does not produce a 25 microgram tablet.

To take 50/100 is fine.

PaulineS,

It's fine to alternate 50/100mcg alternate days.

I agree with Snoopy my tablets come in 25mg so ask your doctor/pharmacist - it is no big deal.
