In one word yes. A lot more. How much are you taking? Most people feel better with a TSH around 1. But it would be good if you had your other results to post T4, FT3. Folks here have a very good understanding. I'm learning myself.
Hi Brubru, I am taking 50mg and after seeing the doctor today and telling her about this forum she upped my meds by 25mg does this sound about right? thanks for your reply.
I have just looked over my results, it says that if on T4 the TSH suggests adequate treatment, whatever that means.
my results for October were TSH level 8.3 miu.L (0.3 - 5.5) and
T4 level 13.1 pmo/L (12.0 - 22.0)
It may as well be wrote in double dutch, I don't understand any of it. Please help me understand thank you.
I don't understand much too. The TSH I'm sure 1 or less. Hopefully you will get replies of others here who understand more. I can only say that gps say within range is normal. But normal means nothing. They don't even test our t3. How do you feel? I've been immensely helped by this site. When I first signed up here my TSH was around 4 on 50mcg Levo doctors kept me on this dose for years. increasing your dose was the right thing, then probably test again in six weeks and keep increasing dose till you are feeling well and low TSH. Have you been tested for antibodies?
If on T4 means if you are taking levothyroxine which is the artificial T4 hormone that our thyroid produces less when we have an under active thyroid. Levothyroxine (T4) is the most common treatment for hypothyroidism and suits many people. Usually people come to this site because even though we are treated we don't feel well.
The TSH at around 1 suggests reasonable treatment not a TSH above 5. Your T4 should be towards the upper level and it's struggling at the bottom. Both results show too low a dose of levothyroxine. Make an appointment for six weeks for a new blood test. Get the earliest possible appointment and fast (you can drink water). Leave about 24 hours between your dose of levo and the test and take levo afterwards. Also ask her to check B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.
Thanks so much for your reply, i feel like im going mad.
Most of us in this site have felt like that too. You are not going mad it's your thyroid. Hang on in there. Read lots educate yourself and be an advocate in your own treatment. Doctors like the word "in range" disregarding how we actually feel. As Shaws said get all your blood tests besides TSH and T4. FT3, antibodies, B12, Iron and ferritin, vitamin D they all have to be optimal to help us feel better.
How long is it since you were diagnosed and have you had a blood test every six weeks with an increase. 50mcg is a very low dose, starting dose and she should up your dose every six weeks by 25mcg until you have no clinical symptoms. With a bit of luck your TSH will also be low around 1 or lower but your GP might not know this and try to keep your TSH anywhere in range.
