I take Thyroxine and statins. Is it safe to take green tea capsules, or will they stop my medication from working?

Bernster,

I take a green tea supplement as it is a well known antioxidant and stimulates TH-2 pathways which is often needed in Hashi sufferers.

If it makes you feel strange then stop taking as it may be that you are TH-2 dominant..

I take mine at least an hour away from thyroid meds.

I'm assuming your GP has prescribed statins for your higher cholesterol level? If so, your cholesterol should come down with levothyroxine or any thyroid hormones if in a sufficient dose. Extract

"If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), treatment may be delayed until this problem is treated. This is because having an underactive thyroid can lead to an increased cholesterol level, and treating hypothyroidism may cause your cholesterol level to decrease, without the need for statins. Statins are also more likely to cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.

I really do wonder at the education of doctors.

p.s. make sure how to reduce statins if you decide to come off them.

I'd drink the green tea, but not within an hour of thyroxine (same for capsules). The statins will interfere with your meds as they decrease the amount of B12 (which is needed to convert T4 to T3). If you can get off the statins (they cause calcification of the arteries and all sorts of other things that may look like hypo symptoms), do so, but don't just stop cold turkey. If you are optimally medicated, your cholesterol with end up in the normal range. And you NEED cholesterol to make essential hormones.
