I smell smoke only when I am in my front room.
I don't need to smell deeply to smell it and when I say to my wife about it she cannot smell anything at all.
Nobody smokes in our home

You joined a Thyroid UK forum to ask this question? Hmmm. Do you think it's thyroid related?
Interesting...
PrimroseStar, not very welcoming to a new member! Olfactory hallucinations aren't uncommon in thyroid patients.
It has been commonly reported as a symptom. I definitely had it
Hello Paddington,
Welcome to our forum.
.... [.. Distortions of case (dysgeusia) and smell (dysosmia) were frequent complaints among the untreated patients with hypothyroidism; .. ] ...

I lost my sense of smell when thyroid hormones were all over the place.
Now I am feeling better .. My sense of smell has returned. ! !
An adequate level of Zinc is required for a good sense of smell & taste.
If you have thyroid issue, post test results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment.

but just in case it isn't a thyroid thing, do you have a fireplace, used or unused, in your front room?
and do you have a thyroid problem.. hyper, perhaps?
That's interesting. I sometimes smell cigarette smoke but couldn't explain why. Nobody in the house smokes or has been with people who do. Now I have a possible explanation!
Welcome to the forum, Paddington22.
I used to smell gas and had gas appliances, pipes and meter checked but nothing. My neighbour did too. The gas leak was coming from the mains pipe in the road which had disintegrated and had to be replaced.
Post thyroidectomy I occasionally smell things which aren't there. Cooking smells, fresh baked bread or fresh coffee in the small hours when it is unlikely neighbours are cooking, baking or brewing. Occasionally a waft of perfume and if I could identify it I'd probably buy some. Happily they aren't unpleasant so don't bother me.
Great postPaddington.
Very interesting to me as well. I have no sense of smell or taste this number of years.
I have started taking a few supplements recently but I am trying to do it very slowly.
Zinc will be my next addition. Crave salt this past 6 months. I did the MTHFR and DIO2 saliva tests recently.
Have mutation for MTHRF but ok for DIO2 thankfully.
A bit lost at the moment but trudging on. I really don't know what questions to ask any more.

I often have olfactory hallucinations. Once I could smell petrol very strongly - and for at least a week - wherever I went. So far, none of the smells have been completely unbearable although when this happens, it's very disconcerting. I've never linked it in my mind to my hypothyroidism but I'm wondering now if there is a connection.
cigarette smoke can be around the whole house and no one smokes, strong smell of curry, dog poop... not a nice one and I have 4 dogs but it comes and goes and nothing found and husband cannot smell anything. coffee that smells like bread ?? just sometimes but its always in the morning and I think hubbie must have made a loaf as I didn't but nope, just the coffee maker.
Interesting, I've recently had a CT scan as been seeing consultant at hospital. Due to the fact for the last 3 years or so i smell cigarette smoke, sometimes so strong it makes my eyes water. Yet I'm no where near a smoker. It can happen in my house, the office or even my daughters school where i help out. Its not all the time either. Ive been under-active thyroid for past 13 years. Makes you wonder!
I thought it was just me! I sometimes smell burning plastic, and have to have a good look round to make sure it is not real. It can wake me sometimes. The other smell I get is Farex (for those of you who are young, it was a baby food), such distinctive smells in a house with a wood burner, next to a pig farm, but the smells are so strong, I can taste them.
I was sent for a brain scan and they did manage to find one, but it was all OK, but I never knew it was connected to the thyroid.
Thanks for putting my slightly wonky brain to rest!
That's ok
But none of this explains why you just smell it in the front room, Paddington - what is different about the front room? You might just have a more sensitive nose than Mrs Paddington.
My husband often smells cigarette smoke, I don't smell any and neither of us have ever smoked. But we always say it's his mother visiting because she used to smoke.
After we were first married (1973 or maybe 1974) we invited his parents to dinner and his mother lit a cigarette at the table. When I asked her if she would smoke it outside it started a real argument off.
So when Mike smells smoke I always think she is here getting her own back.
I had a day last week where I smelt smoke everywhere. At first I thought I must havegot cigarette smoke into my clothes while I was out. But it was also in my clean washing and other places.
This has been a good week for people mentioning obscure symptoms in the forums, and lots of others chiming in to say they get similar! Very useful
I get that too Paddington22, it comes and goes, but then so do my thyroid blood levels! Trying to get balanced over the last year, was overmedicated, now gone under, both horrible. So I can only add to the comments that it is a symptom. It's sometimes like smoke but mostly like cigarettes although no-one has ever smoked in my house ever. I just wait now for it to go...
I often smell things that other people don't, or interpret them differently. Quite often wood smoke, tar or onions.
Welcome.
Post diagnosis I have become like the worlds super sniffer
I have become hypersensitive to chemicals, smells & tastes - no-one can tell me why it's happened. Useful in some instances, but a nuisance in others.
