Don't be nervous, I had mine removed in 2000. Lost my voice for about a week which thrilled my hubby 😜. Recovery was pretty quick and then a journey of getting the meds right as thyroid function replacement. You have the advantage of this group and their experiences to draw from but listen to your body and let your doc know how you are feeling. The lovely doc who removed my thyroid told me he believed your thyroid was your soul and guided your body so trust yourself if you are feeling out of sorts as it could very possibly be related to meds. All a long journey so be patient with yourself. Will be thinking of you and know you will be absolutely fine 💕💕
I had mine removed about 8 years ago, of course you will be nervous. I woke up from surgery and was very sore, a shot of morphine soon helped. I had my op on a Thursday and was home Saturday evening, my voice was very croaky for a couple of weeks, recovery is very quick. As dpa87 mentioned, just make sure you get the right meds and listen to your body. Good luck Bev.
hey i had part removed thyroid i was so scared and watched videos on youtube scared me even more i worried away too much over nothing . but i went on the day they took me in the bed down to operate and i before i know it was alseep and awake again like that i was on loads painkkillers i didnt feel a thing it was NOT as bad as i thought ... when they took the wee tube out of side of my neck i took deep breaths in and out when they did it and it was out in a second and wasnt sore the thought of it was worse than doin it ! i never lost my voice but friends got me a wee white board which was fun to write things down on ... just stock up on painkillers for when ur home and comfy pillows to get u cozy .. its one day at a time from there make sure u have plenty of films or programmes to watch keep u entertained ... and watch oout for sneezing after the opp i never sneeze but of course after haven an opp when u dont want to sneeze u do so stop urself from sneezing mmm trying remember any other advice i can give u when swallowing put ur chin down towards ur chest helps u to biit better to swallowing .. get straws too to sip ur water is better than tryin drink the water cause u cant drink it proper when u cant tip ur head back too much
u will be fine i had mine removed 7 months ago
I've had two partial thyroidectomies, and both were straightforward. They scare you by telling you that one of the risks is damage to your voice, but lasting damage is very rare. The main challenge is getting the medication sorted out after the op.
The initial phase with the medication is the easiest bit, but the fine tuning is a little harder because doctors show little interest in fine tuning. The problem is that they don't understand the importance of getting it right. You just need to be prepared to keep asking if the medication isn't right at first. Don't settle for inadequate treatment.
Make sure you have a GP who listens to you - someone you get along with well.
Good luck!
