Hello
I have mild hyperthyroidism and take 5mg carbimazole daily. Iv just bought well woman vitamins and noticed that it contains iodine (67% of recommended daily allowance) is this ok to take with a thyroid problem? I'm unsure. Thank you.

Nicolejade7, Iodine can reduce thyroid function, just as the Carbimazole you are prescribed does. I would be inclined not to take supplements containing iodine while you are taking Carbimazole in case thyroid levels are lowered too much.

Thank you for your reply, ill have a look for a vitamin with no iodine
Nicolehade7, you'd do better to ask your GP to test ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate. If any are low or deficient which is common in hyperthyroidism there won't be sufficient vits/mins in a multi vit to help.

Some will say steer clear others will advise you to take it. Really you should ask a naturopath as others can only guess and many are biased after only reading one or two articles and not even trying it for themselves. My experience is that it helps and to me it makes sense that it is fine to take it while you are on medication just as it is fine to take it when you do not need or take medication. Let us say that we are comparing two people. The first one needs no medication and has a perfect thyroid. Yet they take iodine. They dont drop dead or feel ill because of it. So long as they are not taking too much. But you can take too much of anything. Nobody says that because you can take too much thyroxine nobody should take thyroxine, yet that would be the same thing. The second person needs help to get their thyroid working properly and they take medication to do it, so why would iodine be a problem for them when it wasnt for the person with the perfect thyroid?
Many naturopaths will say everyone should take ioidine daily regardless of thyroid. In various countries many people do, it helps to prevent all sorts of illness regardless of thyroid. It also helps to clean out the body of toxins, especially things like those caused by mercury fillings or eating rubbish food, metals etc.
I think the problem comes from some people reading scare mongering articles and taking them at face value, others hear that one or two people had a problem with it and instead of thinking that they took too much or didnt need it they assume it is the same for everyone.
Some people manage their thyroid problem by taking iodine and nothing else and insist they are well and managing far better than they ever did on medication.
Only you can decide which group YOU fall into. A naive person would say ask your doctor, forgetting that normal doctors have no knowledge of natural remedies and diet. He will know let about it than you. You would be better off asking an astronaut or artist.
Thank you for your replies I have had my vitamin D, B12 and iron tested and they were fine. Although, that was a couple of years back now.
I'm mainly needing to take it for calcium as I have a dairy allergy.
Thanks again
