Yes, that's fine. The recommendation is that our B12 be around 1,000. You can lower the dose when you think you've reached it.

Thank you Shaws :) will a dose of 1 5mg nugget a day suffice or should I take more than once a day?

Stig5882, B12 >500 is unlikely to be deficient. 1,000mcg should be plenty. Excess is excreted in urine but there's no point in peeing out expensive supplements.

Thanks Clutter xx I really am so pleased to have found all you lovely people on this forum because without your help I and many like me would go insane as regards vitamins etc. No matter how much I read it doesn't infiltrate my tiny brain and some nights I toss and turn because all this muddled information is crashing around in my head. :( For those of us who struggle to make sense of this maddness I thank you all.

Hi stig - yes your result is better than many that appear here. However we must remember that the blood test is just a snapshot at that particular moment - a snapshot of the B12 circulating in the blood. We do however need the B12 to travel into the cells where it is utilised. Only 20% of the result can make it to your cells - so that is 100. Once you are supplementing further testing is of no consequence as the results will be skewed.

As suggested also take a GOOD B complex to keep all the B's in balance. Thorne Research is the one I take.

You never know it may well help to clear the thinking and amazing things will happen :-)

yes...dr had my son do that for 2 months, and now 1000mg a day...b vitamins work best together so dr also insisted he take a b complex vitamin as well at the same time....and a good grade multi.....and a probiotic before bed.....because a lot of healing is in the gut....and flora....

Thanks jacrjacr for that :) I do like to hear what dosages etc. work for others as those of us who are not educated in these things ( me ) sometimes feel as though we are wading through treacle......blessings to you & your son. x

my son was a different person in two month....he used the kind under the tongue 5000mg for two months first.....and dr insisted he avoid as many processed foods as possible and make himself eat breakfast lunch and dinner on a schedule with real foods..and walk 10-20 minutes a day or whatever his body would allow for circulation hence he was so fatigue he wanted to sleep all day....and it caused moodiness as well as do a lot of deficiencies. He also took vitamin d3 5000for a month , then 5000mg 3 times a week( the sunshine vitamin bec he didn't get out int he sunlight a lot )I take 5000mg a day. To this day he still takes 1000mg of b12 under the tongue daily, b complex, d3,multi vitamin that is higher quality than most in stores, and vegetable organic capsules to boost his lack of eating vegetables. So far..... so good...Amazing difference.....

I am so glad your son's health is improving as I also understand young one's hate taking medication and their hormones can make them seem like monsters at the best of times...lol (thank goodness mine are all grown and flown) :) I hope you both continue to get and stay healthy and at least we now know where to come to for 'real' advice. :)

What is he comparing it with, and under what circumstances?

Hydroxocobalamin is used in the UK in injections for Pernicious Anaemia. I think other kinds of B12 have been tried in the past but the Hydroxo B12 lasted longest in the body, so for economic reasons rather than anything else this is why the UK uses it. In the US they usually use cyanocobalamin for injecting.

Hydroxo B12 still has to be converted into methylcobalamin and/or adenosylcobalamin.
