What was your TSH? Yes your doctor should have checked your T4 aswell at least. My GP only checks TSH and T4.
I am not a specialist but no, TSH is not enough to say that your thyroid is ill. You need to check t3 and to and antibodies for full diagnosis. It will be good if you can check your vit b12, folate, vit d and ferritin.
I don't know a lot but It is a lot of great people who told me that.
TSH is what doctors mistakenly think is the 'accurate' way to diagnose. The problem is that it leaves thousands of people undiagnosed and unmedicated and so very unwell. They will be prescribed any other medication except the one their body requires to function properly.
Here is a couple of links of interest. We have to read and learn in order to get better despite the awful BTA guidelines:-
Absolutely not!
To get a complete picture of your thyroid health, and also to check that you have the right levels of vitamins and minerals to help your thyroid work at its best, the following tests should be done :
TSH
Free T4
Free T3
Thyroid antibodies : TPOAb and TgAb
Vitamin B12
Folate
Vitamin D
Ferritin
Iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation
What you can expect from the NHS :
TSH, and if your TSH is out of range you might get Free T4 as well.
They might do TPOAb, but they often won't do TgAb. If you've had a positive result they don't often repeat the test because it isn't considered to be useful (by the medical profession - patients would disagree).
Doctors might do B12 and folate if you ask.
More and more people on here are reporting that they can't get vitamin D tested because they are told the test is too expensive, but you might be lucky if you ask.
Ferritin might be tested if you ask, but the other iron tests will only be done if ferritin is substantially out of range.
Riteshanand, same thing has happened to me. My doctor told me i was fine now as mine was in normal range @ 0.62 mu/L. I asked for a print out, which he gave me. Cannot see anything else on it. apprently i was 12.4 in Novemeber. What symptoms are you having?
TSH is about as much use as a chocolate teapot when you are taking any form of thyroxine.
