Not hashimotos but auto immune thyrioditis..

So Iv been told I don't have hashimotos an more but have auto immune thyrioditis because I don't have a goiter but I still have anti bodies present so it's hypothyroidism. The doc said she doesn't really want to give me a label. Just confused ....

The original use of the term Hashimoto's was used for those with goitre and what later became understood to be autoimmune thyroiditis.

In northern Europe (I think they mean UK & Ireland, Scandinavia, possibly the Baltics, etc.) the same basic disease process was observed but, if called by any special name, was sometimes known as Ord's thyroiditis. In time, it became clear that there is little real distinction between Hashimoto's and Ord's. So some people started to call it all Hashimoto's. Others were happy to call it all autoimmune thyroiditis. Many, doctors and patients, really don't care what it is called so long as the disease processes are recognised.

Hypothyroidism is NOT Hashimoto's. Hypothyroidism is the end result of Hashimoto's/autoimmune thyroiditis. Many testify that they have had periods of hyperthyroidism due to the autoimmune processes - as well as periods of hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is having insufficient thyroid hormone reaching your cells and able to be utilised by them - howsoever caused.

Daniell1991, British doctors don't seem to care for the term "Hashimoto's" and tend to call it autoimmune thyroiditis or chronic thyroiditis. It's possible to have Hashimoto's for years before it causes hypothyroidism.

It would appear, from the geographic distributions of Ord's and Hashimoto's, that there could be a genetic element that determines whether an individual ends up with a goitre or not. Hence whether they are classified as having Ord's or Hashimoto's.

But I know of no evidence that Ord's is any more a genetic disorder than is Hashimoto's.

Let's face it, I suspect quite a number of people might have had a small goitre but it was never picked up. There is often little actual evidence as to which one someone has. And if any goitre you might once have had has resolved, what difference does it make which you have? Or whether it is called autoimmune thyroiditis (or similar)?

I was trying very hard to keep within the topic and hence made no statement of the heritability of autoimmune disorder in general.
