Reversing auto-immune disease

For anyone interested in the Paleo Auto-Immune Protocol (AIP), Eileen Laird's website has loads of information, recipes, life style tips. There are some great podcasts by people who have recovered their health using the AIP. I have been on the AIP for just over three months and am feeling much better.

I agree it's a very good, informative site.

I think AIP is an excellent idea, but only if you are well on the road to recovery and have a decent, reliable amount of daily energy. I tried AIP this year, deluding myself that I could cope with the work involved. I collapsed soon after starting it.

Hi Hillwoman, you are right about the amount of energy needed and I am sorry it didn't work for you this time. I am lucky to have a supportive husband who did all the cooking as I was pretty much bedridden. Now I am feeling better and have introduced some food items, I can make most meals and they are more interesting to eat!

That's good to hear, Scazzoh. I spent ages planning this diet, and my husband was going to do it with me, but it was still far too much work. I would dearly love to find out which foods are aggravating my AI conditions.

An acquaintance did AIP to resolve her rheumatoid arthritis before it reached an advanced stage. During the reintroduction stage she found that most of her problem foods were not the ones she expected.

I've not come across any problem foods so far, but am still in the early stages of re-introduction. I can tolerate rice, chilli, cream, almonds, legumes with edible pods. And wine!I really miss nightshades esp. tomatoes and potatoes, plus cheese, but that is much further down the line. I also like organ meat which helps and make bone broth in the slow cooker. Did you use a recipe book? I've got Mickey Prescott's which gives shopping lists and quite simple recipes. My problem at the beginning was not eating enough protein or fat and so lost a bit of weight, although I have put it back now.

I've been on the Autoimmune Protocol diet going on my 5th week I'm very pleased with the progress just now as I have 3 autoimmune disorders Restless Legs (Willis-Ekborn syndrome), Psoriatic Arthritis & Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) a rare form of Vasculitis (receiving prescribed medication for the latter complaint).

Regarding the arthritis this has been helping extremely well with joint inflammation for Psoriatic Arthritis, inflammation gone lost 21lbs and my state of mind has lifted.

Funnily enough as a child my mum who has passed thought me to make bone broth but with cereal so a bit nostalgic.

I've been working through Sarah Ballantyne's book, Pheonix Helix and Mickey Trescott's website as well. Lots of recipes and shopping lists which are very helpful for freezing foods. Some shops do prepared veggies which were good in the early days as my muscles were very painful but have improved now.

Hi Longwilloe, glad you are improving with the AIP. I got Sarah Ballanyne's book from the library, but to be honest I found it a bit depressing. There seems to be something wrong with most foods (apples and celery on the 'bad' list for absorbing toxins and pesticides for example). Fruit seems to be a bit of a no no because of the sugar. I prefer looking at cook books. I am introducing goat's yogurt at the moment which seems to be going well. I didn't do well with tomatoes and spuds, some of the fatigue symptoms returned so I had to stop them. Sometimes I am not sure what is to do with the food and what is to do with other things. it's not all about gut symptoms, is it? I still have problems maintaining a normal weight and have bought a paleo protein powder which I add to smoothies.
