Does anyone know how or when I should take the t3. It says 10mg a day. I'm already taking 50mg of t4 for 4 days and 75 for 3 days

Karunablue, you can take it with your Levothyroxine. Don't worry if heart and pulse rate are slightly elevated after taking it. It often happens within an hour or two of ingestion but should normalise within the next hour to hour and a half.

Oh Thankyou. Does 50mg t4 and 10 mg sound ok for now?

Karunablue, 10mcg T3 is equivalent to 30mcg T4, so your combined dose now is 80/105mcg daily which is a reasonable dose, but only thyroid levels will determine whether it is enough or too much.

Thanks Clutter I was hoping you would respond 😍

Karunablue,

Although only a tiny pill it is very potent. On starting my 10 mcg a day I experienced a headache and heat.

I would recommend splitting the pill and taking in two doses (5mcg in am with Levo & 5mcg about 3pm) for the first week and then progressing to 10mcg in one dose with Levo in am if things are going well.

Good luck. Adding T3 made me feel tons better.

Flower.

Oh thanks Flower I should have read these this morning before taking the meds. I'll see what happens.

in reply toKarunablue

Haha ... nothing like impulsiveness Karunblue.

If you feel fine, leave dose as one. If you feel hot or your heart starts fluttering, split it into two.

Easy... good luck (again).

If one doesn't have elevated heart rate a little while after taking it, can that indicate that it's not the right dose? Or is it all subjective?

in reply tohose1975

hose

All subjective as we are all different.

Elevated heart rate, heat and headaches are just some of the things to be aware of when starting T3 but don't happen to all.

If anything I would think an absence of an elevated heart rate would indicate you ARE on the correct dose ! .

hi are you just starting on thyroid hormone meds?T3 is potent. I take 10 mcgs in the morning with my dose of t4. I definitely feel better mentally when taking the t3. When I was on a higher dose I took 10 mcgrs morning and then again at lunch time. You could split 5 mcgs in the morning and then 5 at lunch time if that works for you. If you have trouble sleeping you may benefit from taking melatonin which is available on prescription but don't take it every night because you get used to it and it doesn't work as well. I also take zinc, magnesium, calcium, b12 (sublingual tabs), mega b and fish oil. Be careful with going over the 10mcgs daily of t3 as it can be hard on your heart and cause palpitations. all the best with things.

Thankyou Sue. I've been wanting to go down this route for so long but rode it out with the endo until they agreed to try it. I'll try splitting if it's too much. Just taken my first dose this morning

I've been taking T4 for 5 years. Had fatigue problems for about 20 years but they only tested and diagnosed thyroid 5 years ago.

I would recommend reading Paul Robinson's book 'Recovering with T3' (a must read for anyone taking T3 imo) as it explains very clearly the effects of thyroid hormones on the body, how to maximise dosage and crucially timings which often need to be split throughout the day) and then joining his fb support group. He and several admin are very knowledgeable about taking T3 (alone or combined with T4).

I'm on 5mcg T3 and 75mcg T4 I take it at the same time first thing in the morning. Consultant says its all the same type of medication so can be taken together.

You should start on 5mg a day and raise by 5mg every week or if hypo symptoms return sooner. You should also check your temperature at 3pm and you'll know when you've reached optimal dosage when it's 98.6F consistently over a week.

Honeybee, you must be in the US. Normal body temp in the UK is 98.4F. At least it was when I was growing up there.

Hi , I take 20mg T3 and 100mg T4 at night before bed. I found that this means I sleep much better than if I take them in the morning. Sleep disturbance was a big factor when I was only taking T4. It will probably be a bit of trial and error for you. Good luck

I'm taking 100 Levo once in the AM and 25 mcg T3 2x a day. (I split a 50 mcg pill). Ill just say that I don't feel good, I'm sure I have adrenal problems too. But with one brand of T3, I would get a horrible headache and feel even worse a couple hours after taking just 6.25 mcg. I tried 12 mcg and 25 mcg a few times and it was hideous. All I could think about is how bad I felt, I may as well have been dead. I ran low on that stuff and ordered a different brand. It's EP, Euro Pharmacy. This happened coincidentally at the same time I just read about people having adverse reactions to different brands, due to the types of filler used. I read that's why Armour was reformulated. Word is the new formulation sucks, people hate it. But there I was reading that some people hated it and some people loved it. So there you go, for what its worth. And 100 MCG Levo is only equivalent to 1 grain NDT. Many people take up to 5 grains NDT. And 50 mcg Cytomel is only equivalent to 2 grains. So at 100 Levo, and 50 T3, I'm at the equivalent of 3 grains NDT. And I'm glad I'm not dead. Not feeling great, but better than before. Hope that's of use to someone :-)

LAHs in reply toBlake

Blake, I may be wrong but I am beginning to think that one grain of one NDT may be "stronger" than another type. I have read that some people are taking 5 grains of NDT, if that is Armour it would be loosely equivalent to 500mcg's of synthetic (e.g. Levo) - a rare dose.

I take Armour and love it, I take just 1.5 grains and I do not have a thyroid - so you can see why people taking 5 grains have me wondering. I am sure it is not 5 grains of Armour.

Oh, and b.t.w. Levo and it's ilk are measured in mcg while NDT is in mg - or grains. For what it is worth, 1 grain of Armour = 60mg ~ 100mcg Levo. There are other equivalences which measure the actual T4 you are getting but that always confuses me - so I won't pass an opinion.

I'm on T3+T4=15+75. I take all my thyroid before going to bed because T3 (in a biologically appropriate amount) supports adrenal function.

i found taking lio and levo more tolerable taken separately, felt like i'd had 10 cups of coffee when combined

Thankyou so much everyone for your replies and experiences. I've just done my first day on T3 taking 10 mcg with 50 mcg of T4.

I was a bit headachy in the afternoon but I think I might be coming down with a virus. I met up with two girlfriends for a catch up with the usual trepidation of "how long will I last before I need to come home etc". Well I was sat chatting for hours kept up with processing the conversation and speaking. After a while I was wondering why on earth I wasn't sat there yawning my head off as usual. I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch but this might just be the answer.
