WTF...

Having decided to apply for HRT as fed up of flushes, arrythmia, lack of concentration, feeling low (blah...) AND not having paid any tampon tax for over two years, I marched to GP to demand my female hormones back. Just as an aside, he decided to do a full set of bloods and (ta dah!) here I am! Told to take 25mg a day and return after 2 months to check. After reading all of your experiences, I feel a bit of a fraud! All I want to have is some energy back and a dry pillow in the morning!!! Kindest regards to you all.

Well, welcome, and good on the GP. It shows how many women must be mistaking hypo for menopause, doesn't it?

Don't be surprised if it takes a good while to feel better. I got worse on 25 levo.

Personally, I make sure I get the actual TSH result from the receptionist days before I go in to see the GP so I can think about it in advance.

Everyone is going to say, please post your results.

And have your antibodies/nutrients been tested? etc.

Thanks very much for your kind welcome and response.

No testing of antibodies or nutrients at this stage. I have no problem with assertively requesting that these things are done but feel, at this stage, I need to do a bit of research as to what is happening to me to be able to argue my case.

My main, and vain motive for going to the GP was that after 10 minutes of applying my face in the morning, I found it was travelling south in a stream of perspiration. Also, despite having always been a tall, lean individual all my life, I have amassed an extra 6kg in the past fourteen months after being a steady weight since the age of 25. I am about to be 59.

Having read through some of the postings here, I am in awe of how much folk know about their own conditions.

Like the first day in a new job, I am still finding my way around the new intranet and learning the acronyms.

PS I have had a hot flush just writing this!!!

Thanks again.

hi twothirty,

when you say you're on 25mg a day, what medication are you referring to? i'm on HRT for flashes and it takes about a month to work. at least, thats how long it took for mine, i split my tablets in half and only take half a pill a day, (they arent scored, so i use my cutting board and a sharp paring knife). but i also take thyroid meds for my thyroid condition.

or are you taking a thyroid medicine? if so, what did they prescribe to you? if you dont mind answering.

i didnt start out knowing much about hypothyroidism, so i did lots of reading on this site and im glad i did, everyone is very supportive. the members are great and the administrators are amazing, helpful, knowledgable, patient and kind.

Hi- the 25mg is Levothyoxine. GP is trying that first before considering HRT.

Two months is too long to stay on 25 mcg. Go back after 4 to 6 weeks and ask for a test.

dont get discouraged if you dont get better on the levothyroxine, if you post your TSH lab results on this site, the others will help you understand them better, (im not lab savvy, so, i had to post mine when i joined) it gives members a bigger picture and in what direction to steer you next. please, stay connected, there is much to learn here and lots of great people who share your frustration with this awful illness. :)
