Hi everyone.

I did a saliva/cortisol test through Genova and I need a boost as the results were low. Can anyone tell me what and where I would get something to bring the levels up?

Many thanks.

Hello Lisbeth

Low cortisol levels can have a bearing on how thyroid meds work as interferes with the HPA axis which in turn suppresses thyroid function and weakens the immune system.

Adrenal function can be improved with optimal levels of Vit B12, Vit D, folate and ferritin and also supplementing a Vit B Complex ,Vit C (with bioflavonoids which helps it to be metabolised ), Vit E, Fish Oil (EPA & DHA).

All the supplements recommended in the link below for good thyroid function will indirectly aid good adrenal health.

Adaptogenic herbs help the body to normalise after times of stress. Dr James Wilson advocates the following (used with caution.)

Liquorice Root (not to be used with high blood pressure)

Siberian Ginseng Root

Ashwagandha Root

Ginkgo Biloba

There are also Adrenal Glandulars which many find beneficial such as Nutri Adrenal Extra (NAX).

Some prefer Adrenal Cortex Extracts which don’t contain the adrenaline found in glandulars.

You can help yourself by addressing gut issues ( IBS, candida and bacterial infections). Cortisol plays a big part in maintaining blood sugar (glucose) levels so low cortisol may mean hypoglygemia. You can maintain your blood sugar levels & prevent insulin spikes by eating protein, carbs, and fats at every meal (even breakfast) .

Give yourself a laptop curfew and get to sleep by 10pm. I find having epsom salt baths before bed helps sleep, and snack (or drink orange juice) before sleep if you suffer low blood sugar in the night.

A good read is "Adrenal Fatigue" by James L Wilson.
