5 HTP came up will these do same thing thanks x
Hi Razzar - 5-HTP is different to melatonin. I tried melatonin first (can't remember where I bought it) but it didn't help the insomnia at all. 5-HTP has helped quite a bit though (though I still struggle with insomnia - but I'd be even worse without it). You can't take 5-HTP if you're on anti-depressants though as one will magnify the effects of the other.
Hope this answers your question.
Hello Razzar,
I use 5-HTP as was actually recommended it by my endo.
I take 3x 50 mcg a day in morn, pm, and bedtime.
It was working well but internal tremors have overtaken it now and I've been awake a lot in the night.
As Caroline has advised it is important not to take with anti depressants.

Flower, I get internal tremors if I take too much 5-HTP. Very occasionally I will take 100mg at night, rather than my usual 50mg, but if I keep up the higher dose for more than a couple of days I get the tremors you mention.
Perhaps you could cut out one of your doses and see how you get on?
Omg...you are right.
I bet that is what the is happening. I've also been really depressed the last few weeks so wonder if too higher dose has the opposite effect to what it is suppose to do. My endo told me to take 150 day.
I will try just 50 like you. Sometimes I can't see the wood for the trees when it comes to my own health.
Thank you humanbean.

Hi Flower, If you read my reply below, I point out that 5-HTP is converted into serotonin and melatonin. And when I've tried melatonin as a separate supplement it makes me very depressed. My husband has tried melatonin for sleep, and he became depressed on it too.
Perhaps your 5-HTP has produced more melatonin than you need and it has created the depression?
Thank you. I'm can't find my endos email with suggested dosage as have so many....so am now doubting myself and thinking maybe he did say 50 bit who knows ..?.?.. but what you say makes perfect sense so will go with 50 for a while.
If reducing 5-HTP is the answer....it's ironic that the supplement I took to make me happy and sleep actually made me depressed and an insomniac...! ! ..

I take 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), only a small dose of 50mg at night time. It is turned into serotonin and melatonin in the body. See the picture here :

5-HTP is the on the second row down on the left of the picture. It does help me sleep, which is why I take it at night, but I remember when I first took it the sleeping effect took some time to happen. On the other hand it made me less depressed very quickly - within about 24 - 48 hours.
It is definitely not a good idea to mix anti-depressants of any kind because there is a risk of something called serotonin syndrome which can be dangerous :

I've tried melatonin, but it gives me dreadful headaches, makes me very depressed for some unknown reason, and I could only tolerate it in tiny doses (less than 1 mg) for a very brief period.
