Newly diagnosed experimental dose levothyroxine 25mg.. did nt go too well...

Just been diagnosised with autoimmine thyroiditis TSH Borderline ... my g.p politely told me off for calling it hashimotos . . Wonder is it different thing ? This site has saved my sanity ... as have felt G.P not really on the same page with me . Surgery doctors all had different take on whether to perscribe or not. as my life has been completely turned up side down .. never felt so ill in all my life. .. been off work for 2 months ... went back for a week so fatigued could nt walk straight... had terrible week taking experimental levothyroxine 25mg ... felt so much worse stomach cramps so bad stopped them yesterday. .. have not had milk products for over a 6 months as know does not agree with me ... and long term gut issues... G.P not interested ... have i got the energy to battle for lactose test.. ? Not sure where to go from here ...feeling very down... realise that lot people here been through similar. .. that helps ... and more that some of you have got well... thank u

Welshwoman, autoimmune thyroiditis IS Hashimoto's. It's named after Dr. Hashimoto who made the connection between autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism in 1912. Dr. Robert Graves discovered the connection between autoimmune thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism in 1835 but I bet your GP describes it as Graves disease.

It's not uncommon to feel worse for 2-3 weeks when starting Levothyroxine, it may be worth trying to ride through the symptoms now, rather than waiting for symptoms to get worse without replacement. It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it will start working on symptoms, and up to six weeks to feel the full impact of a dose. After 6-8 weeks you should have a follow up blood test as you will probably need a dose increase. Most people are comfortable when TSH is just above or below 1.0. Arrange an early morning fasting test (water only) when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after the blood draw.

Take Levothyroxine with water on an empty stomach, one hour before, or two hours after food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from iron, calcium, vitamin D and oestrogen.

Many thanks for the clarity... I did take it as decribed on empty stomach with supplements taken 6 hours apart but stomach cramps very painfulful nausea and dizzyiness sweeling of lymph nodes groin under arms too much for me ... maybe not hard core enough... but back to doctors ... see what happens next ☺

Welshwoman, there are 3 generic Levothyroxine makes available in the UK, Mercury Pharma, Actavis and Wockhardt. Mercury Pharma and Wockhardt are available in 25mcg. It may be worth discussing your reaction with your pharmacist and asking whether another make can be supplied.
