Educating ourselves about hypothyroidism

Has anybody read the book Your Guide to metabolic Health by John C. Lowe? One person wrote a review saying that they were able to get off meds totally by following this protocol.

Shaws is the expert on John Lowe, but probably asleep as she's pretty well better now!

"Get off meds?" - presumably ones you don't need anymore - Thyroid hormone being the exception as you actually NEED it. Do you mean man-made drugs or natural hormones (produced by our body) ?

Could that one person be Oprah? - she never told how she no longer needed life-essential-hormones any more... worrying J :D

It was N. Lucas (whoever that is) and he/she said he was able to wean off thyroid meds.

Have you read about his work? I'm just thinking the book costs approx. $56 plus shipping and handling thru Amazon. I don't want just another book that says the same thing. I know I should go on an autoimmune diet because I have Hashimoto's but my endo isn't saying anything about diet. He said it's toxins and sending me to get an ultrasound for a lumpy thyroid.

Nicole6,

If people are diagnosed early enough with Hashimotos there have been reports of reversing the destruction caused on the thyroid gland. This would involve a nutrient dense diet and supplements known to dampen immune responses and heal damaged tissue to the point of euthyroidism again.

Think of Izabella Wentz.. The Root Cause.

However, most of us don't know we have Hashomotos until the thyroid gland is well under destruction and too far gone to reverse. As the thyroid gland gets more damaged, hormone is depleted and has to be replaced for life.

The thyroid gland eventually becomes atrophied and produces very little and finally nothing.

Did she sign a contract with someone not to reveal what she takes and now looks quite healthy! What a boost to hypothyroid patients if she did 'tell all'. Big pharma is pretty powerful.

Thank you for the information Flower007. I know mine's too far gone then.

I haven't and I understand it may now be out of print.

I think also it might now be a collector's item. The UK site has one at a cost of more than £1,500. There is another on Amazon at a cost of $250 approx. I think it is aimed at Professionals rather than joe public.

I bought my book..the metabolic treatment of fibromyalgia, or something like that, from Ebay for $80 and it was a steal at that, but it is very technical and i haven't gotten too far, unfortunately.

Regarding getting off of thyroid meds - I'm 61, I've had Hashi's for 15 years and for thyroid medication I am now taking one OTC 130 mg N-------- porcine capsule at 9 a.m. and one at 3 p.m. THIS IS AFTER TRYING MANY prescription thyroid meds/combinations over the past 15 years: (prescription T4-only; 5 different prescription porcine thyroid medications; separate prescription T4 and T3 combinations; prescription T3-only).

I LOVE the idea of not having to take prescription meds for my Hashimoto's, because for me it has been a long, frustrating, expensive journey going from GPs to highly-rated specialists to endocrinologists to naturopaths (AS IT HAS BEEN FOR MANY OF YOU). I can't say that any of them have helped me significantly. I love the idea of NOT HAVING TO SEE ANY MORE DOCTORS - EVER - for my Hashimoto's. Can that happen for me??? My goal is to work toward that.

I just discovered Tom Brimeyer's web site (he has Hashimoto's). He says he does not take any prescription thyroid meds. (Like most of the thyroid experts with their own web sites, Brimeyer sells his own line of supplements. Which thyroid web expert has the best line of supplements? I'll have to post separately on that subject.)

In addition: I eat a nutrient dense chemical-free diet and take supplements known to dampen immune responses. I started OTC bioidentical progesterone 2 months ago. I also daily take turmeric, L-glutamine, D-ribose, and ubiquinol for chronic fatigue and depression. Sometimes I have to also add in St. John's Wort and Holy Basil for depression. I'm hoping eventually???? I don't have to take all these things.

THE BEST HELP AND SUGGESTIONS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED FOR MY HASHIMOTO'S HAVE BEEN FROM THIS GROUP and a few other online groups. I think the moderators are excellent in this group! You all are such a comfort!!

Right now, I'm about 65 percent functional daily. I still have hope that as the progesterone begins to take effect, my Hashimoto's will improve and my depression will subside and I'll have more energy. I'm estrogen-dominant, producing virtually NO progesterone, according to testing. (Not unsual these days for someone my age, according to Dr. John Lee.)

I believe my root cause is genetic - father and two sisters are hypothyroid, and one sister has Hashi's. Extensive testing has not identified any active antigens (AIDS, Lyme, multiple-sclerosis, Epstein-Barr, etc., etc., etc.).

I retired a year ago after working full-time for 37 years. Retiring reduced my stress significantly, and that also helps a bit.

I wish healing to you all!

Dear Ms. Klagh,

Would you please share what the OTC 130mg N ....porcine thing is. So I can try one more thing? Is it Naturethroid?

Nicole 6,

OTC = Over The Counter

Nature-Throid, Thyroid by Erfa, WP Thyroid, Armour Thyroid are all prescription desiccated thyroid products.

I don't know, or maybe don't remember, what Ms. Klagh is taking.

The OTC desiccated thyroid/tyroid extract market is very confusing with suppliers often claiming a) contains full unadulterated dried thyroid, whilst at the same time stating b) does not contain any thyroid hormone. Research has shown that some products do contain thyroid hormone, some don't, some contain a little. If they claim the products contain no thyroid hormone, I don't see how we could be confident of them containing a standardised dose.
