Hi, I have been on levothyroxine ( 200mg) per day since dec 2012... And I am still gaining weight, 25lb in 4 weeks, I am at a loss, it's making me feel low, I walk for 4 hours per day ( due to my job)
My doctor doesn't seem bothered by this, i am at a loss, does anyone have any suggestions, I'm sure my t3 hasn't been checked due to it being too expensive to run this test I've been told,
Tia

I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time since being on levothyroxine. Have you seen a private endocrinologists? Have you thought about changing your meds to NDT or another type of thyroid medication.
If it helps you out all we are all different but the only thing that has helped me stabilize my weight is going on a high carb low fat vegan diet. I am not saying you should do the same thing but maybe you need to change your diet. I don't know if you eat processed foods, gluten etc but all of these can make us gain weight.
My GP said "you won't lose weight if you're still hypothyroid" so increased my dose, the next appointment (more weight gain) "stay at the same dose" - I suppose she forgot
Please post your latest blood test results (with ranges) for folk to comment.
If your TSH is within range labs don't usually test FT4 & rarely FT3 , & GP's requests are often ignored (cost).
For best absorption make sure Levo is taken first (or last) thing with water on an empty stomach away from food & supplements (especially iron & things with calcium like milk, rennies). Scroll down to Hypo here.... thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/diagno...
Basic but vital minerals are also needed in the mix - please check levels of iron/ferritin, B12/folate and Vitamin D (low vit D is linked to depression). There's more, but we have to start somewhere. J
Hello Mandingo,
Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear you are having problems.
Weight gain is a classic symptom of low thyroid hormones as these influence our metabolism and slow everything down.
If you are undermedicated, trying to diet could have the opposite effect.
If you post recent thyroid hormone blood test results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) members will comment.
Also any Vit/iron blood test results...Vit D, Vit B12, folate and ferritin.
If you don't have these or your doctor isn't cooperative these tests can be obtained privately at the link below.
