Confused, tired and gaining weight.

Hi, I had the radioactive iodine treatment in May ( toxic nodules), I was then prescribed 75mg of Thyroxine but after several weeks I had to stop taking the medication due to the fact it was making me so so tired. Just had bloods taken last week after 4 weeks of no medication and results are NORMAL ! I have put on a stone since having this procedure done and nothing I do takes the weight off. I am still very tired to the point that my head feels fuzzy, but this seems to improve in the evening? If I am honest, at the moment I am deeply regretting having the procedure done! Just spent a week eating nothing but protein (willing to try anything) and still no weight loss !

What are the actual results? this 'normal' may be normal for Tom, Dick or Harry down the road but not you.

Have you had the whole thyroid destroyed, or do you still have some thyroid function left?

To be honest, while it is true that some people get more tired on Thyroxine, as a general rule tiredness after Thyroid Gland ablation is far more likely to be down to low thyroid levels. This is even more likely if you are struggling with weight too.

If you can get your actual results (with ranges if possible) that will help you to get better support and advice.

Hi Also be sure to have a Free T3 treatment. Do not forget your bloods will be all over the place for a while.Be sure to have the other associated tests, especially vit D ( corrected calcium if low, before treatment, script, and iron/ferritin, also ask for the % absorption for the Ferritin, it has to be written in ( NHS). The results needs to be well in range. Also the other tests, B12 + foliates ( high in range) and Diabetes, autoimmune , hormonal, both similar symptoms.

Best wishes,

Jackie

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I have to see the consultant at the hospital on Thursday and I will insist on getting these checked. I just hope he is a lot better than he has been in the past !!!!

Hi Mags,

Just be firm with him. Some times the only way, much as we hate it!

Good luck,

Hi , Just thought I would update on how I got on with the consultant this week. Knowledge is most definitely power! Because I was able to question and put what I learned here to the consultant, he agreed to do a lot more tests for me.

Thank you all again so so much
