Weight gain...still?

I posted on here last may, have since had my levothyroxine upped from 25mg to 100 mg per day. I also had a tummy tuck in august. But already I can see the weight go on, even though my endo says my levels are all well within range and he can not understand why I am gaining weight again. Please help, I'm so fed up with it now :-( x

I am having the same problems although I do still feel slightly hypo on 4 grains NDT. I wonder if part of my problem is adrenals so I am saving pennies to get the saliva cortisol test. I would have done it by now but my very ancient car chose January to need more repairs than it's ever needed in its entire lifetime! It is a very good test that tells you your cortisol pattern throughout the day.

If your adrenals are not working properly you may not be converting T4 to T3 very well. Also you may feel more tired than you should. It may be that, because of this, you would benefit from some T3 although it can be difficult to get that prescribed.

When adrenals are not working correctly, sex hormones also tend to be out of whack. Oestrogen dominance is very common but this is partially due to environmental issues as well as lifestyle. Avoiding sugar apparently helps but I'm sure a search will reveal other help measures, including bio-identical progesterone. While you hormones are mixed up, you can find it very difficult to lose weight. It is nothing you are doing, it is your hormones.

I eat very healthily and am very active. I walk everywhere, have a job where I am on my feet most of the day and I do a fair bit of exercise. I should not be 4 stone overweight! I know, however, that it is down to my hormones of various kinds and that once I have them sorted out, I will stand a better chance of losing weight. Hopefully the same is true for you.

Don't give up. Many people manage to lose weight once everything is sorted out. Some people have had a lot of success with the 5:2 intermittent fasting diet. Research suggests, although does not prove, that it has some positive effect on general health. I am wondering if it helps to combat the problems that many of us experience because of our thyroids, adrenals and other hormone imbalances. I might have to try it myself.

Another diet is the paleo diet. Some people have had success with this too. You might find the video posted earlier in questions by Sporty333 interesting too!

I wish you every success, but please don't beat yourself up or feel like a failure. It's not you who is failing!

Take care. I'm off to karate now to get out my frustrations ;)

Even although your dose was upped to 100mcg it may still not be enough to make you feel better or raise your metabolism enough. Maybe your Endo could add some T3 to your T4 which may help. Before the TSH became a way to diagnose thyroid gland problems, the usual dosage was between 200mcg and 400mcg, as they were dosed according to clinical symptoms.

Is it possible to post a copy of your latest thyroid gland blood tests results complete with ranges and someone will comment. Have you also had tested B12, Vit D, ferritin, folate and iron?

This is a link but links within may not work:-

Hi the thyroid does alter. It sounds like you need some T3, that is often weight related. You need to see your TSH, T4 and Free T3 results + ranges ( all vary). Ask the GP`s receptionist for theirs and the endo`s secretary for the hospital ones ( may be different ranges). If you look your self or post them here , you often find that their fine is not ours!If the endo good, he/she should have done all the usual tests in addition., make sure and have results + ranges

Best wishes,

Jackie

Hi - your blog intrigued me, not because of tsh levels but the fact you had a tummy tuck, I have put on weight just recently after having hypothyroidism for 5 years, no weight gain until now. I have a tummy scar already but because I have put on weight it has become a ridge, I was surprised to find that even though you had the tummy tuck you still gained weight.....I was hoping it would sort my problem out.....any advice would be welcome......xx

Hi, well I didn't really have the tummy tuck to lose weight, more to make myself feel better bout myself. My weight gain has been on my mid riff annoyingly, it now juts out over where I had my tuck. I have no idea what to do, how to control it or where to get help. My tummy tuck was a last resort, but to be honest I'm now considering more surgery, though a gastric band/ sleeve would be pointless as I eat less than a sparrow. So, I don't really have any helpful advice...sorry :-( xxx
