Vitamin D deficiency can cause bone pain. Supplementing will resolve it but it's likely to take 6-8 weeks although you will feel improvement after 4 weeks.
Hi Sharon, your low vitamin D may be some of the cause of the pain. I took 30,000 i.u. of D3/wk (is that what you are taking?) and barely raised my level fifteen points. Absorbing is difficult and if you are older, your skin doesn't convert sunlight very well either. I'd still try to get as much sun as you can.
I personally feel that lack of stomach acid causes not to absorb minerals like calcium and magnesium. Why don't you try magnesium taurate or glycinate but even a magnesium/calcium tablet at bedtime may help you. Don't take it near your hormone tablet. I know that your body repairs take place when you are in deep sleep. That's another problem we have as well.
When I was first dx as hypo, my doc put me on levo (twenty years ago and didn't know better) and for that year, my bones ached. The pain is impossible to describe and like nothing I had ever felt before. It was like the ache came from the center of my bones out (especially leg/thigh bones).
When I researched and begged my doctor to put me on 'old' Armour because I was apparently not converting the T 4 to T 3, it was amazing how fast the pain went away and has never returned.
Being hypo has so many symptoms and this is just one of a long list and may not be your problem but it was mine. I hope you can find some relief. Oh.... and aspirin and ibuprophen did nothing for the bone aches.
Just to add.. there is often an inverse relationship between undertreated thyroid and cholesterol.... low thyroid, high cholesterol.
Do you have any recent blood test results with ranges that you could post. Maybe you are not converting the Levo into the Active hormone T3....as someone else suggested.
Are you treating the cholesterol ? Are you treating your thyroid ? What dose are you on ?
Sorry lots of questions - could be a good idea to complete your Profile so we know a little of your background
Not an over pronatorr are you? It seems that more than. 50% of us need some support under our arches... You can buy arch supports in the chemist or on line.... Without them knee and hip pain can be really awful. My friend just left hers out of her shoes for a week whilst she was away... Was in a real state when she arrived back home.... She didn't think they made that much differenc, but she won't be leaving them out again.
The best brand are the Scholl ortho heel . Expensive at about £23 but worth buying one good pair so you have something to compare cheaper ones to.
Will add some. links as soon as I can find them

Here is a link to a video. Which shows the problem... The video refers to runners but it can apply to people who just walk.... youtu.be/hzM0-9vILcA
The reason I suspect it may be this is because it's your hips, knees and legs which are hurting... Would have thought that if it was because of low vitamin. D. That other bones would hurt as well....
I empathise. I have suffered with the same pain (especially prominent in my shin bones) - felt as if my bones were rotten from the inside! It is excruciating.
I seemed respond better when the doctor prescribed a loading dose (1 mega dose capsule per week) rather than taking daily smaller doses. I have no idea why this was.
If you struggle with absorption via tummy, Better You do a 3000 iu spray called DLux (they do a 1000 iu one too) that you can take orally/sublingually. It's sold in Holland and Barrett as well as online.
Of course on a sunny day getting outside for a while without sunscreen is a very good idea.
For me that particular bone pain got a lot better with mass Vitamin D3. I also got my thyroid under better control with NDT and that massively helped my foot pains and cholesterol (mine was mildly elevated). I had been incapacitated with metatarsal pain and plantar fasciitis for a few years. So in the meantime I did use Scholl orthotics to relieve pressure on the ball of my foot and heel and never walked around bare foot (always wore soft slippers indoors). The orthotics are so relieving to the foot pain, I found. I highly recommend them. I got mine on eBay for a good price.
Wearing the wrong orthotics for your feet can also cause pain. Please ask GP for referral to Podiatry service. Mine trailed 5 different orthotics and then customised one to finally get my feet right. This has improved things a great deal and now going back for smaller ones due to the improvement.
yes, it is very important to get measured for inserts. If you can see someone who takes a mould of your foot and gets them made to measure. We had to do this for my daughter and it cured her of her problems with her ankles, knees and hips.
Someone I know have to take 3100 iu for 90 days , and alendronic acid once a week. Change is gradual , not immediate. Talk to your GP again. Good luck and don't give up!
Take your vitamin D, which is a fat-soluble vitamin, with your fattiest meal of the day to help absorption. Have you tried taking all your vitamin D at once? I've never seen anyone split-dosing vitamin D before, but obviously it is personal choice.
Is your vitamin D supplement supplying you with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) or vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)? D3 is the best one to take - you'll raise your levels much quicker. Some people can never budge their levels when they take D2.
I can sympathise with the pain that you feel, I remember describing it to the doctor that it felt as though my bones were aching, such deep pain. The pain seemed to get worse before it got better once I was on vitamin D supplements (I was very deficient). I was either told or read somewhere that it can take a few weeks to feel the benefit of supplements - I have no idea if it's true, but it was certainly was in my case.
Sharon, as you can see - lots of us have shin/bone pain and low vitamin D (as well as Thyroid trouble). I was in agony trying to ski some years ago - & gave up.
Please post your recent blood test results for folk to comment further.
8000iu D3 should make a difference soon, but it took me a couple of months to feel it - it actually got worse to start.. sorry I use boost spray 3000iu Oct to March, and occasionally if my elbow hurts (first sign for me). It's not something that goes away IMHO - unless you move to Spain and eat a ton of sardines!
Also, as others have said - Vitamin D doesn't work on it's own - read up on Magnesium, K2, VitA etc. - lots of posts here..
Elevated Cholesterol is a marker for low thyroid function - see Dr Kendrick's blogs for more info.
I work as a holistic therapist and often find that the root of any problem is not where the client thinks it is. The body is one; a continous web of fascia which runs from above the eyebrows, over the top of the head and down to the toes; it surrounds every muscle fibre, bone and organ and is extremely strong. Distortion of one part will effect all other parts. I learnt this to my cost...before I trained I was told that I had one leg shorter than the other and given shoe inserts; these damaged one hip and five years later this is only just beginning to heal. The problem stemmed from a large abdominal scar, not from any perceived problem with my legs. The scar tissue distorted my pelvis, twisted my back and caused overall pain.
I am so glad I read your post, as have been experiencing the same symptoms for years now with deep bone ache, permanent hip pain, heavy legs , constant sore throat, joint pain with no help or respite from the doctor, as I am 56 he just puts it down to old age & says just take an occasional ibuprofen when you see fit.
The Receptionist who reads me back my Thyroid results over the phone & considers herself a qualified Doctor says, " No you are fine, your levels are all within range. " Tell that to my aching bones, permanent whitlows, mouth ulcers, deep pain in my bones that makes me think I have bone cancer, oh I could go on, but apparently it is all in my mind....
