Constant Thirst

Hi,

Only my second post, was wondering if a constant thirst is related to thyroid issues?

It feels like I am drinking gallons every day and then peeing gallons !

BTW. Went gluten free yesterday, desperate to try anything :-)

I personally have not had this. However, you should get your blood sugar checked and see a doctor as this can be related to diabetes. x

Jacqui_D, constant thirst and frequent urination are symptoms of diabetes. Ask your GP to check. It may help GP if you keep a diary of how much you are drinking and how frequently you are urinating.

Thank you I will start a diary from tomorrow

Also ask for kidney function to be checked.

Jacqui,

I have Hashimotos and was under medicated for a long time.

I have suffered this constant thirst but also a salty mouth for about a year now. My blood sugar levels and kidney function have been checked and although my creatinine level was raised for a while, it has since reduced since my meds have been raised.

I am still thirsty and drinking loads of water but weirdly don't seem to pee any more frequently, just larger amounts!

I'm telling you this so you don't worry about having diabetes. Obviously it is vital you get tested but your symptoms could just as easily be thyroid related (although your doctor would never agree).

If you have recent blood test results, post complete with ranges (numbers in brackets), for members to comment.

I get very thirsty when I'm hypo.

I'm not diabetic.

I have made an appointment for next week with my endo, I will tell him about the thirst and hope he will request more samples.

You know, having this thyroid problem I've had so many different symptoms over the years that made me at times think I had all sorts of other illnesses. I always got them checked out but they always lead back to my thyroid and at times my pernicious anaemia. But mostly the thyroid.

Just horrible.

Hope you get sorted.

I've suffered constant thirst for years and drink like a fish, it's not diabetes in my case. It can also be an early symptom of Addisons disease, and lack of aldosterone.

I had dry mouth and constant thirst until I was medicated.

I was tested for diabetes mellitus and insipidus, but both were negative.

This is another symptom of years' duration that has now gone.

I also had those symptoms, along with others, when I first went to see GP in April. I had blood tests for diabetes, kidney function, thyroid, vit D, iron and ultrasound for bladder, kidneys & liver. Everything was fine apart from the thyroid and the T4 was 3.7, can't remember the other levels. Currently on 75mcg Levothyroxine (Levaxin as it is called here in Sweden), to be increased to 100mcg in 7 days time. I seem to get the thirst/drink symptoms for a few days after the dose is changed, but it settles down again.

Kept a note of how much water I have drank today = 6 pints and still thirsty!!

Hi,

Hypothyroidism can muck about with your ability to maintain your blood glucose....big time.

Thirst can be a sign apparently as can hunger, shakes, weepiness. I get it and eating controls it.

However.....if you're as thirsty as you say you are then really you should be tested for diabetes.
