Lost one strip of 100mg levothyroxine and doctor refusing to replace..

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I lost two weeks worth of levothyroxine, so all I have left for the next two weeks before my new prescription is due is the 25mg of my 125mg daily dose. The doctor has flatly refused to prescribe anymore, even though this is the first time this has ever happened. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do? I have some sea kelp, so I could take this additionally to the 25mg, but just dreading feeling awcful fairly quickly.. My TSH was 2.5 last time itnwas measured, this was on the 125mg dose.

You can buy on the interweb....

but I would also find a new doctor.

See a different doctor!

Have a look here:

And, if you feel you possibly can, put in a formal complaint.

That is disgraceful. I would go to another doctor if possible. If that fails, order it online.

A 28-tab pack of 100mcg levothyoxine tablets costs the NHS a grand total of £2.02.

Click on levothyroxine near the bottom of the page on that link to see the info ^^^ It might be a good idea to print it out and include it in any complaint you make. Your doctor is an ogre.

I got so mad reading your post, I wanted to break something. Here we have another case of GPs playing god. This is outrageous and so obviously negligent.

I suggest you buy online from one of the sources where you don't need a prescription. Your health must come first.

The other thing you could try, but I would not count on it, is go to an NHS walk in GP clinic on a saturday. Get there early as it is first come first served. Take evidence of previous scripts with you. Say you miscalculated and have run out. You thought you had another pack, but when you opened it, it was empty. On top of that, you are going away (abroad) on a business trip on Monday for 2 weeks/ you are going on holiday abroad for 2 weeks, therefore you need an emergency prescription for 1 week's worth of meds.

Do not waste your energy putting in a complaint as nothing will come of it - focus on getting the meds.

Experiments show that people do fine with once a week dosing of t4. Can you not take it for a week, then take a weeks worth, then wait another week and the prescription will be ready? Crap situation though and your doctor is being horrid. I would complain to the practise manager. ( in writing). Then buy some online anyway so you always have a a back up.

Xx

remember though that the practice manager is employed by the GP and has no real power.

This is a terrible way to be treated .I would make a complaint but like everything else when it concerns gps its on deaf ears. What about NHS Direct and make a point about your gp refusing say you think 2 weeks without meds is a concern to you.And can you advise me what to do,Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to call in my local pharmacy tomorrow and see whether they can issue an emergency prescription, and if not, i'll try and pled with the doctor. Really appreciate the support though, left the doctor the other day feeling really upset after being 'told off' and being told I needed to take a more responsible attitude to medication storage. Maybe time to move to a new gp! Thanks x

This is not helpful to you right now, but may be in the future. I routinely order my new repeat prescription a few days to a week early, and hoard the extra tablets. This is because I've found both the GP and pharmacy to be very unhelpful in filling prescriptions promptly and keeping up supplies. My pharmacy routinely take twice as long to get a prescription in as they promise. And I'm a disabled person, so when I was more naive would walk all the way round to the pharmacy to find my prescription wasn't there, "come back tomorrow", they'd say. But because I'd done the walk one day, I'd need to rest before I could make it again.

Oops, rambling on... So generally I don't feel secure unless I've got enough medicine to last me for any possible eventuality.

Thanks for all the advice. I went to my local pharmacy who advised I could call 111 and they would make a referral for me to collect an emergency supply. I called 111 whilst at the pharmacy, and 111 advised me to contact my local out of hours GP practice and get a prescription from them. My GP surgery is the local out of hours, so thought that was that. Spoke to the pharmacist, and they agreed to issue a two week emergency prescription for me, for £3.26.. So I've now got a two week supply :-) phew. Still feel i shouldn't have had to go through all this for a prescription which is essential for me, but luckily the pharmacy were really helpful.

Fully agreed that you should not have to have gone through it all.

I am breathing a sigh of relief on your behalf. :-)

Hiya,

Go to the pharmacy that normally dispenses your prescription and explain your dilemma. I had the same problem with my e-prescription not arriving at the pharmacy and my GP surgery were refusing to send it. The pharmacist gave me the medication and said he would sort it out and not to worry.

I would get in touch with your local Health Authority and ask their advice. This is nothing short of criminal.
