Hi guys,

I am 26 years old and have been diagnosed with an under active Thyroid. I am on Levothyroxine NA 75mcg tablets which i take very morning. I suppose i am just looking for any advice anyone can give.

I keep putting more and more weight on even though i am in the gym three times a week and it really feels like i am fighting a losing battle. I'm not as tired as i was however still struggle in the morning even if i have had a good sleep - i still feel drained.

My doctor was helpful before i was diagnosed however now it feels like i am fighting to get bloods done and get advice from her. I saw a dietitian an she couldn't give me any advice on my diet and if any foods were good/bad for my thyroids. Just feel that i can't really talk to anyone about it.

I have noticed that some people take vitamins, are there any that people have found helpful that they would recommend?

If anyone can offer any advice that would be lovely.

Hi Jo,

I'm also brand new on here too and I've been taking Levothyroxine for about a year. I'm had some great effects from taking powdered Spirulina. I get the organic powder from Holland & Barrett and mix it with fruit juice. I had to start on a very small amount as the 'gastric effects' were unusual for me (I don't want to be too graphic, I'm sure you can guess) only 1/2 a teaspoon twice a day. It tasted foul to start with but I can now guzzle it in one hit and it's not so bad. I have more energy, what a difference! The Levo helped, the Spirulina helped further. Good luck. Fuzzbrain

what about iodine, does it contain iodine?

Thyroxine contains iodine (well, it made of iodine). You are probably not on a big enough dose of levo yet. What were your latest test results? Your GP should be testing every 6 weeks and raising levo until you are well. Most people feel well with TSH around 1 and Free T4 and free T3 in the top quarter of their ranges.

You also need top of range B12, and folate and ferritin at least half way up their ranges (and selenium) in order to convert t4 (levo) to the active hormone t3 (liothyronine) that your body needs.

It contains too much iodine and is not recommended for hypos.

Jih, Don't just 'take vitamins', they only help if you need them. They're not magic bullets. And some of them are toxic if you take too much. Also, they work in groups, taking just one out of a group won't help much.

Taking a multi-vitamin won't help, either, if you have real deficiencies, because there's not enough of anything in them to make a difference. Multi-vitamines are just for maintenance - if that.

You should therefore get as many tested as possible : vit D, vit B12, folate, iron and folate minimum - minerals are important, too. B12 should be at least 500, preferably higher; the rest should be at least mid-range. And whilst you are probably deficient in all of them, the level of your deficiency dictates your dose.

It might also be helpful, if you can to get selenium and zinc tested.

The vitamin you can take is vit C - lots and lots of it. It will help you absorb your Levo, support your adrenals, and many other things.

So, if you can get them tested, then post your results here and we will be able to help you further. :)
