I seem to produce far too much phlegm. especially in the morning, & have to keep clearing my throat. It drives me up the wall! Is this a symptom of underactive thyroid? I`d buy something from the chemist for it, but most of these medicines interact with levothyroxine. Is there anything that I can do to dry everything up?

Constantly having to clear my throat.
Phlegm has also a good side to it as well. This is a link which might be useful.
Hayfever could do this, gluten can too, dairy is a mucus builder. You could have post nasal drip. Antihistamine may help. X
I do have a runny nose a lot of the time, but I don`t want to use anti-histamines because theyv`e been linked to alzheimers.
Can I suggest you go go gluten and dairy free and see if this helps. I have suffered this for 25 years! I have taken an antihistamine for the past 4 years, my thyroid is optimally treated for now and it doesn't. Make a jot of difference boo! Is it all antihistamines or just certain kinds as they differ in ingredients. X
It is a hypo symptom, yes.
I have started producing enormous amounts of mucus, day and night. By chance, a test on my adrenals showed that my secretory immunoglobulin A was elevated - off scale. The Genova commentary said that this was usually linked to intestinal infections, since this type of mucus is produced there, as well as in the respiratory system.
If it's msinly in the morning it could be an acid reflux problem. This can produce phelgm and It can be 'silent '- as in , you are unaware of it and it's symptomless. Guess you could try treating and see if it improves.
I visited my GP with this symptom a year ago, having already had it for a year.
I have been hypothyroid for 30 years, but she did not connect the two. Instead, I had a chest x-ray and numerous blood tests. No obvious reasons came up for the phlegm, but hyperparathyroidism was indicated.
As part of the tests and scans for that, a FNAC was done on my thyroid, indicating nodules.
When I saw the parathyroid surgeon (at last) last week, he said he would also be removing half my thyroid for tests. When I related the phlegm story, he said that the thyroid nodules could be the cause.
To cut a long story short - ask your GP to request a Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) (quite quick and painless) to see if there is a connection.
Couldn't this be a symptom of not just beib=ng Hypo from undermedication, but from having an Autoimmune Disease, in and by itself? We are full of inflammation and it really effects everything too.
Google candida intestinal overgrowth,my phlem problem clears up when I take probiotics. I have Hashi and eat glutenfree but the constant clearing my throat drives me mad so every so often I take a course of probiotics to put Candida in its place. I take Bio-Kult 14 strains but there are many makes available.
