I was taking levothyroxine(Synthyroid) 150 mg (for several years). My last visit, my doctor, took me off this & now it's 2 & 1/2 Cytomel/day. My hair was coming out & I wondered if this prescription would take care of that problem. Any replies appreciated! Thank You! b

Hair loss can be related to low thyroid. I would look up Danny Roddy, he has some good materials on this. I think the Cytomel is a good start, since you probably don't covert T4 to T3 well (most women don't due to our higher estrogen burden). I would also monitor pulse and temperatures to make sure you're taking enough. You might want to add back a little T4 to help keep your TSH down. Most people do best on ratio between 4:1 and 2:1. But diet is very important also.
vanilla..why do you think t4 is the med, that will bring TSH down? Why does it matter, especially? If you are looking at a med to bring down TSH, then t3 is the best, but TSH, is not a good indicator for figuring a dose. On t3 only, you need to go by symptoms alone. There are at least 10 reasons why people don't convert well, not just Estrogen and where do you get the info. that "most" people do well at a particular ratio? Just very curious as to where you get your information.
Dépends why your hair was coming out, Brenda. Could be due to the thyroid - do you have any blood test results to share with us? With ranges, of course.
Have you had your iron tested? Low iron can also cause hair loss. If you haven't, ask for ferritin, iron, vit D, vit B12 and folate.
However, it's possible that the hair loss could just be caused by levo itself. Try taking Evening Primrose Oil and Borage Oil and see if it helps.
Hugs, Grey
You will not know if it helps until you try it.
what is the strength of the cytomel? Are you in the US?
I am taking 2 1/2 25mcg of Cytomel once per day. Thanks for your input. b
Dépends whether or not she's got Hashi's. Hashi's people can become very ill with NDT - been there, done that... Synthetic is the only way to go for some people.
Yes, I know that. But that doesn't mean that everyone is the same.
I have Hashi's, too, and I couldn't tolerate any brand of NDT at any dose. Not even after having treated my adrenals and optimised my iron, etc.
There are a lot of people like me. NDT is not a magic bullet. I lost about 6 years of my life because people kept telling me it was, and I was too ill to think for myself.
Everyone is different, and everyone should be aware of that.
