Ayurvedic medicine : Has anyone tried ashwagandha... - Thyroid UK
Ayurvedic medicine
I have not tried these but can advise that if you want to try them, be sure to get a good brand e.g. Himalaya. Even this brand however uses ingredients we just don't get in EU medications. I take something from this brand, because it has a global license for efficacy, it does work for me though I'm unhappy with the use of colour and other fillers.
Thanks soteti for your reply I have just heard of this type of treatment and wanted to see if anyone has tried it yet I have to look into more b4 I take it further
I haven't tried ashwagandha but it does depend, it doesn't suit everybody. It dépends on whether you are TH1 or TH2 dominant. Try reading "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? when My Lab Tests Are Normal: a Revolutionary Breakthrough in Understanding Hashimoto's Disease and Hypothyroidism" by Dr. Datis Kharrazian.
And this from Suzy Cohen : "Ashwagandha: In animal studies, this herb stimulates more T3 production. Additionally, it nourishes tired, stressed adrenal glands. This causes your stress hormone cortisol to come down, and it may help you lose belly fat."
But do check to see if you have high cortisol before taking it. You Don't want to lower low cortisol even more.

Thanks greygoose will check these out I was talking to someone in India and they said that it can help with a lot symptoms but I will look into more b4 trying
Yes, I know. I've had Indian people suggest the same thing to me. But I'm not convinced they know much about thyroid I'm sure Ayurvedic médicine is good for a lot of things but perhaps not everything.
Thanks greygoose have u had thyroid long I was diagnosed in October of last year it's all new to me trying to find something to make life a little easier so just trying different avenues to see if anything comes of it to help
I was diagnosed 15 years ago. But I'm pretty certain I've been hypo - and had adrenal problems - since I was a small child.
I remember how I struggled when I was first diagnosed - I didn't know what a thyroid was! And my first endo was so unhelpful! And the funny thing is, I struggled on for several years in ignorance, and it never occurred to me to do any research! I just trusted my doctors and got sicker and sicker.
Then, one day, after a painful appt with the endo, I was sitting in front of my computer and crying, wondering if this was going to be my life from now on. Was it really Worth living? When I suddenly realised, I was sitting in front of a computer! With internet! Why had that never occurred to me before? lol And even then, my first thought was, I need a book! lol So, I went onto Amazon, and requested a book on thyroid. So many responses! I closed my eyes and pointed at the screen... And as luck would have it, I'd picked a Mary Shomon book. And the rest, as they say, is history. lol
I dread to think how people manage who haven't got internet. It doesn't bear thinking about.
Well I will be 43 this year and do you know something I have 3 sisters, my mum and dad me and 2 other sisters have got hypo there is one who doesn't, and the one who doesn't always took salt the rest of us didn't so am wondering is the iodine a big player with me I read if u had hashi not to touch it, I have never been diagnosed so I don't know if I have it or not, but its funny how the ones who don't take salt have the thyroid problem then u here about conflicting reports that sea kelp is good for some and not for others, tried the gf diet for nearly 2 months it didn't do nothing for me, so that's y I am thinking about natural substance just don't know were to start with it, I know its trail and error for everyone
Actually, when I said 'salt', I was thinking about 'salt', not iodine. I Don't use salt with iodien added. For one thing, I have Hashi's and very high iodine already. For another, the salt itself isn't good, it's processed salt with all the goodness taken out of it.
I use Himalayan pink or sea salt from the Camargue. They only have tiny, tiny, traces of iodine - which is as it should be - but lots of other trace minerals, too.
My take on iodine : get tested to see if you need it before going anywhere near it! If you test deficient, get selenium tested and then find a doctor that knows what he's doing (difficult). Don't try to go it alone.
But salt is very necessary for health. If you Don't ingest any salt, all sorts of things can go wrong with your health. The heart needs salt, and the adrenals need salt. If your adrenals become fatigued, that could cause thyroid problems, because the two work very closely together.
Besides, it makes food taste soooo much better! So, get stuck in on the salt! lol
Here's an article about the importance of salt :
thehealthyhomeeconomist.com...
The thing is i don't think i could take it again i haven't used it in years and am talking as far back as when i was a teenager thanks for putting the article up I will defo have a look at it I know I eat salt if its in the ingredients but I don't know if it's enough
Not only probably not enough, but the wrong type of salt, I expect. If you talking about the salt content of processed food, then it is the wrong type.
I'm not suggesting you smother your food with salt, Although, don't you put salt and vinager on your fish and chips??? Or Don't you eat fish and chips? And what about a salad? Can you really eat a salad without any salt?
I honestly don't put salt on anything unless it is already in the ingredients, I am not going to lie when I eat chips there is nothing on them alot of people wonder how I can eat them so plain, plus I don't eat fish I can't stand it, I would eat chicken fillet 5 day a week I am going to try quinoa I hear brilliant reports about it
I sourced my Ashwagandha powder from 'iherb.com'..."Starwest Botanicals, Organic Ashwagandha Root Powder, 1 lbs (453.6 g)". Two packets cost $36.94NZ including courier. I make my own gluten free bread and add a tablespoon to the mixture. I use teaspoon in smoothies too. I seem to have more energy....early days yet.
Thanks mongolia1 for getting back to me I will be doing a bit of research on this and I will tale it from there
