Has anyone on here ever tried this herb?

Hi JLT, I have never tried guggul because I know it is a thyroid stimulator, and it is my humble opinion that stimulating a sick gland is not a good idea. But, I suppose it depends on why you are hypo. If you have Hashi's, it really wouldn't be a good idea, and if you are hypo because of iodine deficiency it wouldn't do much good. For the rest, I guess you'd just have to try it and see. But ask yourself this question: for how long can you stimulate a sick gland before it gives up completely?
I hope someone else will have something more intelligent to say! lol

Hi greygoose
I don't have Hashis. I also don't have iodine deficiency.
I have a TSH under 1.0, I actually produce T4 and reasonable but not optimum T3, but it is not getting into my cells that well as shown up on a thyrpoid urine test.. This could be due to mercury in my system due to amalgams and post amalgam removal.
All other levels such as my iron, ferritin, folate, B12, D3 are good status. So my naturopath suggested a slight increase in Naturethroid and trying Guggul. It is my understanding it does not stimulate the thyroid, but helps better convert the T4 to T3 in the liver.

Well, I'm not an expert, but I looked into guggul quite a few years ago when Mary Shomon was talking about it for weight loss - which of course it would be good for if it increases the amount of available T3 - but I read in several places that it stimulates the thyroid as well as helping conversion so decided to give it a miss and take selenium instead to help conversion. I haven't seen anything about it helping T3 getting into the cells though.
And that's all I can say about it.

JLT, I'm not actually sure that a urine test can tell you whether or not T3 is getting into your cells. I think it can only give you levels abit over a 24 hour period. You mention that your levels are all good, have you done a salivary stress test to check cortisol and DHEA? Could it be possible you have some periphal tissue resistance? Have you tried just upping the Naturethroid a bit to see how you feel? How recently were the amalgams removed and have you had time to clear whats in the body? Were the amalgams removed properly? PR
Hi PR
I am still trying to establish exactly what does a urine test tell one?! versus a blood test, which is a moment in a day of what T4/T3 is in the blood. I stopped Naturethroid and other supps for both tests.
Yes, adrenal profile has been done twice in 10 months. No low cortisol, 1 high cortisol reading at night. DHEA was a bit suspect, but I supplement with DHEA.
Amalgams removed properly/safely with an holistic dentist, last one removed in Autumn. Quite likely I still have Mercury in the body as have said above. Yes, am upping the Naturethroid a bit I will also try some Guggul.
I actually feel quite well which is not what the urine test reflects!

My 16 year old daughter who is sub clinically hypothyroid with high (out of normal range) antibody levels is taking it along with other food supplements after an appointment with a London based doctor who we found on Thyroid UK's list. She's been on this cocktail of supplements, and no other medication, for two months and the change in her is incredible. Before she started them she was sleeping for 14+ hours a day, not coping with her GCSE work and no social life and now she's sleeping more normally, coping with school and she's going out every week with her friends again. I'm hoping that we see some more improvement in the coming months as she had got so low that she had started to come to terms with the fact that, as she was, there was no way her dream of going to university in London was ever going to come to fruition. Even if she stays as she is now she would cope so we are just very grateful for the improvement we have seen so far.

Thanks so much for your response.
Delighted to read your daughters improvement using Guggul.
May I ask what other supplements she is taking along with Guggul?
Would also appreciate a private mail with regard to the name of the london Dr you used if that's OK?
best

Hi
I'm quite new to the forum but have found this old post which has given me some hope. I also have a conversion issue and was considering using Guggul as I do dnot want to start using T3 medication or Armour. I gather your daughter was doing well on this alongside other supplements, I hope she is still well and flourishing. Can you let me know how she did with the gugggul and if there were significant long term benefits, also can you let me know what other supplements she found helpful?
Allt the very best

Two years on my daughter is doing brilliantly. Her skin is glowing, she has lost weight and leads a normal life in every way. She still shows some symptoms of hypothyroidism, she is always colder than everyone else wherever she is and she needs a lot of sleep, also her eyebrows have never grown back properly in the outside third. All of her food allergies have gone except for gluten which she can now tolerate small quantities of. She continues to take the food supplements and will do so indefinitely. I'm also thrilled to report that she's going to uni in London in September and I know she will cope😊 Please PM me if you want exact details of what she is taking.
Ok, how do I pm you?
Hi, I'm so glad to hear your daughter is doing well. I have the same issue for years and it really takes a toll on your life. I have to sleep a lot more than normal people, I am always tired and cold. I have tried everything and nothing seems to help. Could you please let me know what this supplement is that you tried for your daughter. Hopefully it'll help me too.
Thanks for sharing that information.
I have been finding Ashwaghanda helpful in keeping me steadier on T3 only. I can't convert T4 properly, in spite of adrenal support and vit/min supplements. Guggul sounds interesting.
I would also be glad of the name of the London doctor by PM Good to hear of your daughter's improvement.
Could you please let me how you are you are doing with the T3 and herb Ashwagandha? I believe I have the same conversion problem as you do. I am now on 100 mg levo and on day 2 using Ashwagandha. Unfortunately, however I haven't had the chance to try T3..yet.
