Any Hypo thyroiders who didn't take soy supplements?

Just to put my mind at ease-I used to take soy isoflavones to help with menopause-and they did help.

Have read articles saying they can bring about thyroid problems. So -is there any body out there who didn't take these supplements who developed hypothyroidism in their 50s?

Many Thanks.

I don't think taking soy isoflavones will necessarily bring about thyroid conditions (although I suppose it possibly could) but avoiding them is more about not stimulating the thyroid when you are taking a specific dose of thyroid meds.

I also understand soy could increase hashimoto thyroiditis attacks.

Soy doesn't stimulate the thyroid. It is a goitrogen, and impedes the uptake of iodine by the thyroid, thereby causing hypothyroidism. But it's more thant that. It also impedes the uptake of thyroid hormone by the cells - also causing hypothyroidism.

Celticlady, soy suppléments isn't the only reason for becoming hypo in your fifties, there can be all sorts of reasons. Women often develope it around the menopause. But it's certain that taking soy didn't help. Glad to hear you've stopped them.

Celticlady, I haven't taken soy isoflavones and as far as I'm aware soy has not been large in my diet although I wouldn't say it has been soy free and I developed Hashimoto's and thyCa.
