T4 and hypertension

Has anyone else been diagnosed with hypertension while on T4 only? Have you then been prescribed an additional T3 and had it help? I've been reading several articles about the addition of T3 to levothyroxine helping with high blood pressure levels and I want to know if anyone has experienced this and resolved it.

Can you find an endocrinologist that will test you?

I've just been reading your previous post. Is this the same doctor in the practice or another. If so they look to be singing from the same hymn sheet which isn't very helpful! You cannot really say whether T3 would be helpful without a reading and I don't think asking if you can have a trial to see if you become hyper will change his mind either. It does sound those that he will acknowledge a test from a private source as he's recommended where to have one done. I know such things are expensive but if you can afford it it might be the way to go and we can then help you with the results before you see him again.

Hi he didn't recommended I just said if you won't do it is there anywhere I can get it done privately . He said nuffield but they need referral from dr and results go to dr not to me even if I pay

Sorry I thought that if he had told you Nuffield then he would be happy for you to go there and would accept their readings! I stupidly, because I wanted to bypass my GP, when to a private hospital to see a private GP so he would ask for the tests. It cost me a fortune and he never sent my results to me even though he said I would. I argued and hospital sent them to me. I thing he wanted me to pay for another private consultation but that's not what he said originally. Then I had to get Practice manager to chase up ranges that NHS Endo had just told me were. normal I'd found he had also done an FT3 which he'd refused to do as not important as it didn't do anything and I wasn't capable of taking it! It's because he'd refused to do it that I went elsewhere. when I saw him though he refused to give me the ranges hence me dragging the PM into the argument. I knew I could have rung up myself but wanted the Practice to be aware of the Endo's attitude etc.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 1978 and was started on levothyroxine and with exceedingly high blood pressure in 1990 - I was on medication for high blood pressure from then until 2007 when I decided I wasn't going to put up with the side effects any longer - I started taking T3 in 2009 - the T3 I buy in from Mexico as my GP will not prescribe - I don't have high blood pressure any longer. I think it is definitely a side effect of levothyroxine.

Thanks! Yeah I've been on bp meds for 4 days now because my bp was 242/145 at one point, and they want to bring it down. I do NOT want to stay on these things for the rest of my life, and T3 sounds like the way forward for me as well. I'm seriously considering paying the money and finding a doc that will prescribe NDT for me, since it seems the last 6 years I've had a multitude of problems healthwise and I don't recall having them when I was on it in the States.

Also, did you have any change in your energy level?

I don't know if it's caused by the levo, but it can be caused by the hypo. I had high blood pressure all my life until I was optimally treated on T3 only. How are your thyroid levels?

They only test TSH for me and its at 1.2. If felt ok, just tired sometimes but mostly functioning. Id gotten so used to it id forgotten how much better id felt with T3 as well.

Well, that's not enough, is it. TSH doesn't tell you much once you're on thyroid hormone replacement. You need to know your FT4 and FT3. I'm willing to bet your FT3 is low.

But if the high bp is caused by the hypo, the tablets aren't going to have any effect. They certainly didn't for me. So, that should tell your doctor that you need T3 if he knows anything about thyroid.

Very interested in t3 rather than bp pills
