My Endo did prescribe Armour for me but we had to kind of demand it and he was visibly upset about it not to mention going into rants about people being on thyroids to lose weight and how we should read the literature on synthroid from the this and that agency promoting it, as it was so obviously the best. Making me feel like in effect you're stupid and uniformed for wanting to do this but I'll prescribe it for you if that's what you really think you want.
Not sure he didn't sabotage that a bit though by giving me a dose that would have been way to high for me IMO for someone just starting on thyroid meds 120 mgs. Needless to say I had a negative experience with it making me feel like I was having panic attacks every morning. Then when I called to talk to them about the dose they said "we can't even talk to you about this for 3 months cause it will take that long for your body to adjust"
Thank goodness the surgeon that removed my thyroids was the guy that handled thyroid meds before this Endo came to town(the town in question is 60 miles away from me and the Endo is the only one in this part of the state).
But the point is just this you are the patient demand what you want. I know easier said than done. And by the way the Endo mentioned is someone I no longer see. I let Surgeon/Dr/ENT manages my meds and he is soooooo much more knowledgeable than that dreaded ENDO.
Good luck getting what you need and thanks for sharing the article it helped change my feelings about the Armour.
Mmilli, it's a bit rich for an endo to imply a thyroidectomised thyCa patient is wanting hormone to lose weight 2 grains Armour was around the right dose to start you on though, especially if he wanted your TSH suppressed. I was prescribed 60mcg T3 which is equivalent to 180mcg T4 as an initial dose. Switching to 200mcg made me very ll though. Sometimes one type or brand of replacement simply doesn't suit and its necessary to find another which does.
I hope he takes notice as at the last American Thyroid Conference in 2013, the protocol was stated 'levothyroxine only is to be prescribed according to the TSH' (or words to that effect). Mind you I think it was being funded by one of the pharmaceutical companies that make stacks of money from levo as do doctors who prescribe it.
