As I've posted before some might know I've been taking thyroid s for almost 2 weeks now... I'm taking 1 grain and going to up to 1 and a half from Saturday. ... I think I was expecting to do cart wheels across the room and feel amazing after reading so many different threads on NDT. ....but I feel quite disappointed really... my hands have gone really dry and hair feels thin!... look like I've grown another chin .....and feel in a little bit of a fiery mood .... I also take citalopram but I'm hoping it's all going to kick in soon and I can see the benefits... is this normal? ??

Hi les121

Don't give up hope it is early days. I have been on NDT since July and have just recently managed to increase another 1/4 grain. I am now on 2 1/4 grains. For me it has been a slow process.

Hopefully your 1/2 grain increase will give you more relief from your symptoms and you will see some improvement.

Unfotunately, NDT is also a thyroid hormone and we have to get to the optimum amount for us before we feel well. Consider how long it took before we knew or were diagnosed with a problem with our thyroid gland as it is a very slow process and maybe long before we have symptoms.

I am hopeful you will feel better when you increase your dose on Saturday. I tried 3 NDTs before I found one with which I was satisfied.

I have just looked up Citalopram and as its an SSRI maybe that's having an affect on the uptake of your thyroid hormones.

This is an excerpt and I wonder if it also has an affect on NDTs:

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sertraline (ZOLOFT), widely prescribed for depression, has been associated with a decrease in the effect of levothyroxine. Further studies are needed on this, and on any similar effects of other SSRIs.

This is a link but do not do anything before your talk to your doctor who prescribed.
