Feeling under-medicated. Teva?

Hello all,

I started taking 75mcg of levo on the 9th. Before that I was on 50mcg and feeling better than I had in ages.

I was bumped up to 75mcg by GP (The only result I had was TSH 5.44). I know I need this much nearer to 1 but I did feel like I was making improvements esp after going GF.

Anyway, I've started suffering with anxiety and fatigue again and wondered if it could be the 25mcg tablets? Since nothing else has changed and I was feeling better on the single 50mcg tablet.

Which brand was 50mcg tablet?

Do you have enough of these to start adding 1/2 a 50mcg tablet instead of Teva

Request new prescription from GP if not (explaining you want to stay on same brand as before)

Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable.

Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription.

Watch out for brand change when dose is increased or at repeat prescription.

Many patients do NOT get on well with Teva brand of Levothyroxine. Teva contains mannitol as a filler, which seems to be possible cause of problems. Teva is the only brand that makes 75mcg tablet. So if avoiding Teva for 75mcg dose ask for 25mcg to add to 50mcg or just extra 50mcg tablets to cut in half

Teva, Aristo and Glenmark are the only lactose free tablets

Physicians should: 1) alert patients that preparations may be switched at the pharmacy; 2) encourage patients to ask to remain on the same preparation at every pharmacy refill; and 3) make sure patients understand the need to have their TSH retested and the potential for dosing readjusted every time their LT4 preparation is switched (18).

Levothyroxine is an extremely fussy hormone and should always be taken on an empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after

Many people take Levothyroxine soon after waking, but it may be more convenient and perhaps more effective taken at bedtime

No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap. Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away

(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)

When it’s time for 6-8 week blood test ..

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

50mcg is Northstar which is Accord I think.

I've was thinking I might do half a 50 tablet. I only get a 28 day supply at a time but I might just have to take the risk that my prescription is flagged for fulfilling 3 lots instead of 2. 🤔

What a pain! So frustrating; 1 step forward, 2 steps back...

Watch out for Northstar 25mcg as that’s Teva

Accord don’t make 25mcg tablet

in reply to SlowDragon

Yes, that's the 25mcg one I have. I've definitely felt worse on it.

Put in a yellow card and request that “No Teva” is added to all future prescriptions

After a couple of ok months of feeling quite bright on Accord, my next prescription was filled with Teva. 4 days after i changed to Teva on same dose i felt sluggish and thick headed, and stayed that way. I don't like 'em and have now changed chemist to one who is willing to avoid Teva .

The receptionist at the doctors felt the need to say " yes but you're the exception" when i mentioned why i wanted the chemist changed..... of course i only thought of the appropriate reply when i was walking home..... There are thousands of us.

I've filled in Yellow Card for it... even though there's nothing 'wrong ' with it, it certainly suits some people. This idea that " no one else has a problem, it's just you" needs squashing.

Thanks, Tatty. That's really interesting to know.

It bizarrely feels like I'm not taking any levo at all. Fatigue, anxiety, short temper all came back within a day or so. It's so disappointing but better to know I'm not alone!

Yes, I think the gaslighting in the medical industry needs addressing... How many years have been collectively lost to those with thyroid issues due to low quality of life and being told "everything's normal"... 🤔

Its quite a subtle difference , and could just be mistaken for 'time of year' or something , but it's twice i've noticed it now, so i'm confident it's related to changing from different brand to TEVA.

This time i'd been really enjoying driving my daughters speedy little car every day ( her driving test got postponed due to covid , so i have to go with her to work and drive the car back). I was even thinking ' i want a vehicle again , this is fun, i could go to so and so...'

Then mid August i got TEVA, and stupidly , because i was feeling quite good, when i noticed it was TEVA i didn't want to spoil my day by being 'that difficult woman' at the chemist, asking for the same brand etc while the chemist patronises you, and i wasn't certain that i had a problem with teva any way , i'd just noticed that they felt a bit 'slower' than Mercury brand.

But 4 days later , i was back to driving like a 'dodderer' with no interest in going anywhere other than home ASAP.

Still on the TEVA for another week 'cos i got a blood test coming up and want to get it done on same tablets as i've been on, but i don't want any more of them.

I'm still not 100% certain if its any particular brand my body doesn't like, or if it just doesn't like change.

It’s usually the fillers that upset us or have allergies to but didn’t brands have different fillers so overall there is something for everyone. Some doctors haven’t taken this on board and it’s probably trial and error that gets us on the right track. So most importantly when you get something you are happy with as doctor to put it in your prescription then all should be fine.
