Does your thyroid continue to shrink?
xjjx, I think it is likely that treatment will slow progression of the atrophy but it will eventually shrink to a small fibrous mass incapable of producing thyroid hormone. Hashimoto's is also an autoimmune thyroid disease but it usually enlarges the thyroid gland for a time before it atrophies it as I described above.
So thyroxine cures the underactive issues but does not stop the body attacking itself so to speak ....
Does anything ... ??
Just random thoughts i know ,,
Correct. I've been on replacement hormone for 23 years. Undermedicated on Thyroxine for 22 of them. My thyroid is for all intents and purposes totally dead at this point. Killed by Hashimoto's. I may have been able to help the situation if I had known all those years ago what I know now. Eliminate gluten, soy and dairy. Keep Vit. D, folate, ferritin, B12 etc. at optimal levels. Maybe it's not too late for you. Do everything you can to keep the inflammation down. It may help.
xjjx, Addressing the cause of the autoimmune attacks can reduce attacks and antibodies. Some people have successfully reduced or eradicated antibodies by adopting a gluten-free diet. Gluten is thought to be a bit of villain in autoimmune diseases. It doesn't work for everyone though.
