have been feeling lousy for ages with usual underachievement thyroid symptoms, constantly being tired, weight gain, feeling down, cold etc had thyroid blood tests came back as borderline. In the meantime my voice became much deeper so was referred to thyroid surgeon at hospital to check my thyroid. My gp guessed that he would not find anything sinister and that I would start on levothyroxine after I had seen the specialist and had another blood test to recheck thyroid levels. As predicted consultant found nothing after having a camera down my throat but he did say thaty results of first blood test showed my thyroid was very underachievement and would write to my gp and recommend the medication. I have just had the results back from my repeat thyroidtest and they are classed as normal! Despite this I still have all my previous symptoms and feel rubbish. The only thing making me feel better was the thought of going on the medication. My gp is ringing me back later on today to discuss what happens next but do you think it's likely they won't prescribe it now? Any thoughts appreciated.

First blood test show underachievement thyroid follow up normal please help.
Damn predictive text meant to say underactive
Welcome to the forum, Silvergirl1.
The predictive text isn't as stupid as it can be, underachieving is an apt description
Ask for a printout of your last two sets of results and post them with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after the results) and members will comment.
If your GP hasn't done so already, ask for thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies to be tested to confirm or rule out thyroid autoimmune disease (Hashimoto's). This can cause fluctuations in thyroid levels and symptoms.
When you have a repeat thyroid blood test make sure it is early in the morning when TSH is highest.

Thanks for the info very interesting reading. I do not have the results from the tests but I do know from speaking to the ENT Dr at hospital that my antibodies were very high. Anyway to update you my GP phoned back last night at 9pm!!! Crikey I was in bed as my usual tired self but she said she was very surprised that my Thyroid levels now satisfactory. Now bear with me as I am new to this but I think she said my TSH before was 10 and now it was 1. Am I right in thinking that the high antibodies can cause your results to be like this or is my brain more fuddled than I thought!? Anyway I was surprised that she agreed me to to start on the medication suggesting 50 or 25 I went for the 50 option and need to have a repeat test in 8 weeks. I was just so pleased she agreed to pescribe it for a minute there I thought I would have to go on feeling like this.
Thanks again for the links!
Silvergirl, Hashimoto's can cause TSH to fluctuate but not usually from 10 to 1. It would be best if you got a printout of your results next time you go to the surgery. It would be unusual for a GP to prescribe Levothyroxine if TSH was as low as 1.0.
Take your Levothyroxine with a full glass of water one hour before, or two hours after, food and drink, two hours away from other medication and supplements and four hours away from vitD3, calcium, iron and oestrogen.
If you have your results - with ranges - then do post them here and people will be able to offer advice and support.

Nothing to add to the great advice already given. Just to say I love the idea of an underachieving thyroid - I may have to start using that in everyday conversation...
I don't believe there is any such thing as borderline, its like saying you can be a little diabetic or a tiny bit pregnant!! I used to have a singing voice and was part of a choir, now I can't find any tunes and can't reach notes!!
Thank you clutter, yes I probably have those results wrong, I wasn't expecting her to call so late. Next time I will get a print outo the results rather than second guessing. Thank you for your advice on taking the medication too.
