Selenium requirements

Just a little nugget of wisdom for you all. Chuck 2/3 Brazil nuts in your diet a day and you've got your RDA (and a bit more) of your selenium. Bish bosh, done with the added bonus it's a natural mood booster too. Great for winter

Hi Jodypody.

The only problem I believe is that because our soil is so depleted these days not all brazil nuts have very much selenium in them. And of course there is no way to tell.

I find it better to take a supplement so at least you can be sure.

Nah I'll argue that point with you and there's scientific evidence to support it. Lest you not forget the nut is protected by a shell. The cost difference alone is worth considering. That's actually your RDA in 1/2 nuts so you could go nuts pardon the pun and eat 5

You need to know from where the Brazil nuts are obtained. A survey done on Brazil nuts in Brazil determined that if the soil in which the tree grows has very little selenium, then the nuts also have negligible amount of same. There is a published study on line.

What's the shell got to do with it?

Besides, I find I get sick of Brazil nuts very quickly! It would be impossible for me to eat 5 of them every day year in year out... Pft! Prefer the suppliment, know exactly what I'm getting then.

a) I wasn't ranting. b) I'm perfectly chilled, thank you. c) Most people have know this for ages and also know that it is no-longer recommended for obtaining selenium.

But thank you for your kind intentions. Much appreciated.

Hugs, Grey

Really not a good idea to use brazil nuts in this manner. There are many experts that back this opinion up and for the reasons people have already stated here.

Please to anyone who reads this thinking it is a good idea, it is dangerous on so many levels. You don't know from one batch to another if there is enough selenium taken up by the brazil nut or worse that there is too much.

If you are low in selenium supplement for a short period of time and get your levels regularly checked whilst doing so!
