High TSH and High T4

I've just seen my GP re bloods taken last week. He had asked me to do as directed by my endo. and reduce my T3 only meds. from 60 to 40 mcg.

My Tsh went from 0.1 to 42 and T4 from 0.3 to 1.6

My GP is happy for me to resume my usual dose after these results but what does this result show please.

Beaton, TSH rising to 42 means you were undermedicated on 40mcg T3. FT4 is sometimes low when taking oral T3 so the dose decrease may have helped it rise or it may have risen in response to the high TSH, or both.

Try to persuade your GP to test FT3 next time, it's more relevant than TSH and FT4 when you are on T3 only.

Thanks Clutter, You have explained the T4 rise. It seems the lab doesn't want to test T3 even when asked to do so. xx

Beaton, When TSH is high, FT4 and FT3 are usually low, so most labs will only test FT3 when TSH is suppressed unless the GP writes 'on T3 only' or picks up the phone and gets heavy.

I think this was a case of endo.'s revenge.

I have been at the same hospital for over five years. Going from T4 to combo. of T4 and T3 then to T3 only. I had upped my T3 on the result of the last bloods, where the TSH seemed to rise for no apparent reason.

I think the endo. didn't like it because he hadn't been consulted,he also asked why I was there, even though I had six monthly appointments made by him. Also he said he didn't want to see me again. I did tell him my health was better than it had been in years.

Well I'm happy with that.

With the lower dose my temps. were around 35 and all the secondary symptoms returned.

I shall continue to be treated by my GP,who goes on symptoms.

I have complained on the hospital website about how arrogant the endo. team have been over the years.I was asked to withdraw it as "they" didn't think it was appropriate. My response was that I will stick with my comments and was prepared to face them over the matter. Needless to say I haven't heard from them since. :)
